Hi Folks,
Again, there’s lots to share, so I’m consolidating information into one tidbits email. If the formatting came through, you can scan the bold purple text to quickly determine what may be relevant to you. Public library staff, you may be especially interested in the last two bullets.
* Oregon PTA is hosting a webinar about the crisis in Oregon public school libraries that will feature some members of the OASL board – From the Capitol to Our Classrooms: Championing Investments in Public Schools => School Libraries<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k6f8MjDxTgh4V8B28xZa28iSBCC4W_6d3hSAVnq_WmY/edit?tab=t.0> (bit.ly/or-pta-libraries), Wednesday, 10/8, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm Pacific. It’s for parents and guardians of students, educators, and anyone else interested in learning about the role of strong school library programs in schools. Please share.
* Oregon State University’s AI Literacy Center<https://ailiteracycenter.oregonstate.edu/> is hosting a webinar aimed at staff, including librarians, who work in middle and high schools – Making Savvy Decisions about Artificial Intelligence in MS & HS Education<https://events.oregonstate.edu/event/making-savvy-decisions-about-artificial-intelligence-in-education?utm_campaign=widget&utm_medium=widget&utm_source=Oregon+State+University>, Friday, 10/10, 10:00 am to 10:50 am Pacific.
* Related to AI, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) has a new information literacy toolkit, which was spotlighted in the fall issue<https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/ORED/bulletins/3f48285> of the ODE Digital Learning Newsletter – Navigating Now: А Practical Toolkit for Information Literacy in the Age of Al<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/teachingcontent/Documents/Navigating%20Now_%20A%20Practical%20Toolkit%20for%20Information%20Literacy%20in%20the%20Age%20of%20AI.pdf>. Information literacy is defined as an umbrella term that includes research, media literacy, digital literacy, AI literacy, and more. The role of school library staff is highlighted on pages 6, 9, 11, 17, 32, and 33. 🎉 One featured instructional strategy is lateral reading, and OSLIS is included in the resources list at the end of the toolkit. Recall that OSLIS has Learn to Research video tutorials about lateral reading for elementary<https://elementary.oslis.org/learn-to-research/external-resources/learn-to-research-videos-for-elementary> and secondary<https://secondary.oslis.org/learn-to-research/external-resources/learn-to-research-videos-for-secondary> students. And, of course, OSLIS provides a research model for elementary<https://elementary.oslis.org/learn-to-research> and secondary<https://secondary.oslis.org/learn-to-research> students that is supported by instructional content including video tutorials, information literacy ebooks, and worksheets.
* Just in time for Banned Books Week<https://bannedbooksweek.org/>, the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse<https://slo.oregon.gov/oifc> (OIFC), a function of the State Library, released<https://omls.oregon.gov/pipermail/libs-or/2025-October/023186.html> the 2025 OIFC Annual Report<https://slo.oregon.gov/ld.php?content_id=82461057> about book challenges and other intellectual freedom incidents in Oregon. From July 2024 - June 2025, there were “50 official challenge incidents in public libraries, special libraries, and schools. The number of challenges is tied with 2001 as the fifth highest reported since the State Library began keeping track. The incidents included challenges to 66 unique titles and 68 items, the fourth highest number since 1987…In a new trend for Oregon, 60% of challenged items were hidden or vandalized, rather than going through official channels.”
* And last but not least, the Washington Library Association is offering a Trauma-Informed Libraries Summit<https://www.wla.org/2025-trauma-informed-libraries-summit> online on Friday, 11/14. If you’d like to attend, you can sign up for free registration through the State Library of Oregon. Details are in the email below.

Subject: [Libs-Or] WLA's Trauma-Informed Libraries Summit: Sign Up for Free Registration
Hello library community!
The State Library of Oregon is happy to share that we will once again be providing free registration for an upcoming online summit hosted by the Washington State Association:
Trauma-Informed Libraries Online Summit, November 14, 2025
[WLA 2025 Summit Logo]
You will be able to attend a day of virtual sessions for the essential knowledge library leaders need to establish, encourage, and maintain trauma-informed library workplaces. What does the latest data tell us about what staff experience on the front lines of library work? How are leaders innovating with trauma-informed care in academic, public, school, and special libraries? How can staff be empowered to advocate for themselves and lead from every level, regardless of their job role within the library? These questions and more will be explored with mental health experts, leading researchers, compassionate leaders, and frontlines practitioners.
Who is the Trauma-Informed Libraries Summit for?
While the Summit has a leadership lens, the content will be relevant for anyone and everyone who works in a library (academic, public, school, or special), regardless of whether they’re in an official leadership capacity. The audience includes front-line staff alongside managers, supervisors, directors, department heads, deans, etc. Additional information coming soon regarding topics and the day’s schedule at WLA’s event page<https://www.wla.org/2025-trauma-informed-libraries-summit>.
If you are associated with an Oregon library (of any type) as a staff member, volunteer, or a Board/Foundation/Friends member, you may sign up<https://www.cognitoforms.com/StateLibraryOfOregon/RequestFreeRegistrationForWLASummit> starting today to receive your free registration and instructions on October 8.
Please note:
1. WLA registration opens on October 8, and at that time we will send out registration instructions along with the free registration code.
