2013, more than 92,000 twelfth-graders were assessed in either reading or mathematics. The national sample of schools and students is drawn from across the country. The results from the assessed students are combined to provide accurate estimates of the overall
performance of students in the nation and in the 13 states that volunteered to participate in the twelfth-grade state pilot program.

The NAEP mathematics assessment measures students’ knowledge and skills in mathematics and students’ ability to apply their knowledge in problem-solving situations. Twelfth-graders responded to multiple-choice and constructed-response questions designed to
measure what they know and can do across four mathematics content areas: number properties and operations; measurement and geometry; data analysis, statistics, and probability; and algebra.

The NAEP reading assessment measures students’ reading comprehension by asking them to read selected grade-appropriate materials and answer questions based on what they have read. Twelfth-graders responded to multiple-choice and constructed-response questions
designed to measure their reading comprehension across two types of texts: literary and informational.
