Hey! Any of y’all doing Teen Winter Reading programs? I think a lot of us do, and I love it! Here’s what works for us at Tigard: I’m running our fourth (I think) Winter Reading program now. It’s so simple
and the engagement is really fun. We started in pandemic times when teens would register online, choose from a small selection of books of which we had multiple copies, and then we’d pack them up to-go through our takeout service. That was the year I created
a new booklist every week of the program, including custom Instagram slides, which was bananas. We’ve streamlined since then. Teens stop by the reference desk to select a book from a cart. This year our Friends gave us funds to buy around 40 books, and we’re
supplementing with leftover prize books. I’m counting the books that go away to keep track of the number of participants. That’s it! The teens don’t have to do anything else but grab a free book. However, if they like they can follow instructions tucked into
the book to submit page counts every time they finish reading a book. Each page count submission is another chance to win a Powells gift card (also thanks to the Friends), and the bookmarks sort them into teams for a quietly cutthroat page count competition.
The form they use to submit also asks them what they read and to rank it on a 1-5 scale. I send weekly updates (see this week’s below) to all those who have submitted page counts on how their teams are doing, and add a little tidbit about a library program
or resource. This year, I’ve challenged them to break 100,000 pages! I post competition updates on Insta and Facebook, as well in the Teen Scene, and at the end of the program I’ll post a book list with the highest ranking titles from the list of books the
teens read.

That’s it! I’ve attached the bookmarks that sort participants into teams and instruct them to post page counts. Peruse and/or steal them, please! I pick a different theme every year for the teams, and this
year is tea, because cozy. Also, we’re reading A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow
for the Teen Book Group this month. How is your Winter Reading structured?
