<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">This is an effort initiated by Oregon public library directors to get more detail about circulation for better comparisons. First-time circulation
is the first time a patron checks out an item, new or old. This is not the same as when a brand-new book is checked out for the first time. For example, Ima Patron checks out a worn copy of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That’s counted as a first-time circulation.
When she goes online to ask to keep it longer, that counts as a renewal. When Joe Public checks out that same copy of the book months later, that is a first-time circulation. I also<span style="color:#1F497D">
</span>advise that if renewals are made online and can’t be assigned to a particular consortia member, the consortia have a formula to distribute those renewals among members. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
