Subject: April 2013 CDC Vital Signs: Preventing Repeat Teen Births

Dear Colleague,

Each month the CDC Vital Signs Program releases a call-to-action on an important public health topic using the latest available data. This month's release is about preventing repeat teen births.
Some facts:

* Nearly 1 in 5 births to teens, ages 15-19, are repeat births.

* Teens are taking steps to prevent repeat births.

o More than 90% of sexually active teens report using some form of birth control after their most recent birth.

o However, only about 20% of sexually active teens are using the most effective reversible types of birth control (e.g. implant, intrauterine device).

* Working together, a sexually active teen and her health care provider can decide on the best birth control method to prevent repeat births during her teenage years.
The attached MMWR and Fact Sheet are being sent to partners and the media this afternoon. We hope you will take time to review whichever information sources you might find most useful. We encourage you to be aware of what you can do to stay healthy, and encourage your family and your friends too. Also, please consider sending this material to your professional colleagues, partners, grantees, and others who can use it to help promote the nation's health. Each month we will send you these CDC Vital Signs materials on the day of release. You can find back issues of CDC Vital Signs material at www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns<http://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns>.

We thank members of the Division of Reproductive Health, NCCDPHP, for their expertise, hard work, and collaboration to produce this issue of CDC Vital Signs.

Please send any comments and suggestions to Brandy Peaker, MD, MPH, CDC Vital Signs Acting Coordinator, at vitalquestions at cdc.gov<mailto:vitalquestions at cdc.gov>.
