size=3>Oregon Department of Forestry staff has been advised that J.E. Schroeder,
who served as State Forester from 1965 until his retirement in 1979, passed away
January 22<SUP>nd</SUP> at the age of 95.</FONT></DIV>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman"
size=3>“Ed” Schroeder was instrumental in replanting efforts for the Tillamook
Burn while serving as an ODF employee. Schroeder was appointed as <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Oregon</st1:State></st1:place>’s eighth State
Forester in 1965.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><o:p><FONT face="Times New Roman"
size=3> </FONT></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman"
size=3>Under Schroeder’s leadership, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Oregon</st1:State></st1:place> launched several efforts aimed at
conservation and long-range management of forests, including implementing the
nation’s first statewide forest management laws when the Forest Practices Act
was passed in 1971. Schroeder oversaw the dedication of the <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Tillamook</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Forest</st1:PlaceType>
in 1973 and formal recognition of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Sun</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Pass</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Forest</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> in the late 1970’s. During
Schroeder’s tenure the Forestry Program for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State
w:st="on">Oregon</st1:State></st1:place>, which serves as the Oregon Board of
Forestry’s central policy guidance plan, was introduced to guide long-range
forest policy planning for the state.</FONT></P>

size=3>To honor Schroeder’s commitment to replanting <st1:State
w:st="on">Oregon</st1:State>’s forests, including the devastated Tillamook Burn
area in northwest <st1:State w:st="on">Oregon</st1:State>, in 1980 the Board of
Forestry named ODF’s tree seed orchard near <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">St. Paul</st1:City></st1:place> as the J.E. Schroeder Tree Seed
Orchard in honor of Schroeder.</FONT></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman"
size=3>Following retirement, Schroeder lived near <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Salem</st1:City></st1:place> and is survived by numerous family
members. A graveside service is planned for Thursday January 28 at
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Restlawn</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Memorial</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Gardens</st1:PlaceType>, <st1:City w:st="on">Salem</st1:City>; funeral

w:st="on">Salem</st1:place></st1:City>.</FONT></P>
