Hi! I just learned of another great resource on developmental milestones. http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/rfhf.special.topics.shtml#Developmental_Milestones
Milestone Moments: Learn the Signs. Act Early<http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/reading.healthy.families/Research/MilestoneMomentsEng508.pdf>.
This booklet by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/index.html> provides parents with a checklist of key cognitive and physical milestones, suggests activities to help children learn and grow, and provides information about what parents can do if they are concerned about developmental delays.
While the focus of this booklet is over-all child development, it provides a lot of information around language development which is the foundation of early literacy. In addition, many of the suggested activities support early literacy development.
For example:
* Your baby at 2 months: Look at pictures with your baby and talk about them.
* Your baby at 4 months: Repeat your child's sounds and say simple words that start with hose sounds.
* Your baby at 1 year: Build on what your child says or tries to say, or what he points to. If he points to a truck and says "t" or "truck," say, "Yes, that's a big, blue truck."
Enjoy,
Katie
