There will be enhancement grants coming out in the near future. With the budgets still uncertain, we will be able to maintain those grants at the award similar to last year. We hope to keep them steady for one more year at least. I will get out a notice when the paperwork has been signed and the process has begun. 2. We have a new Legal Specialist at our office! Many of you may not know that Ty Manieri moved back to his home state of Louisiana and has a position similar to the one he held here; except that the legal unit is all one, not a separate Department of Justice as Oregon has. We keep in touch and he is doing well. Now for the fun news: Our new legal specialist was at the fall conference and met many of you. Her name is Claudette Rushing. She came to us from Baltimore City Schools Office of General Counsel. Prior to attending law school at the University of Maryland to pursue her law degree, she taught special education/reading and language arts for five years in a variety of different schools. She specialized in working with students who are dyslexic and is a certified reading and language arts teacher at the secondary level. She is a member of the Maryland Bar and worked with the U.S. Department of Education and the National School Boards Association before moving to Oregon. We are very fortunate that she has had a deep interest in Oregon and wanted to move here! These are going out two months before we sent them out last year so you should have time to use the funds. Both grants, the extended assessment grants and the enhancement grants are flat funded this year, meaning you will be receiving about the same amount of funds as last year in each grant. These enhancement grants, as you know, are for the support and guidance for students with disabilities and are allowed for a variety of purposes such as professional development in various formats, RTI, PBIS, etc. The extended assessment grants are to be utilized for the same purpose as in prior years. Support to staff and our students is critical and I know you will consider these funds for those purposes. Your notification should reach you, your superintendent and/or business manager shortly. The grant manager for both grants is Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann. Feel free to contact her if you have questions after you receive the notifications. Watch for them!! It was great seeing so many of you at the fall conference. And thanks for all you do on behalf of students with disabilities.
