The 6th annual Oregon Safe Schools & Communities Coalition (OSSCC ) State of Safe Schools report has just been released. This report analyzed 2017 data on Oregon 8th and 11th graders and found that the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people in Oregon is worsening. Bias-based bullying, sexual harassment, and fear based absences are on the rise in schools-especially related to gender identity or sexual orientation. The report outlines some research based practices to improve safety and enhance the learning environment in Oregon schools, including:
? trained teachers
? trauma informed classrooms
? inclusive curriculum
? affinity based student supports
? administrative oversite
You can find the report on the Oregon Safe Schools & Communities Coalition website, here.<https://www.oregonsafeschools.org/wp-content/uploads/Safe_Schools_Report-2017-Final.pdf> If you have any questions, please contact Sasha Grenier at sasha.grenier at state.or.us<mailto:sasha.grenier at state.or.us>.
