SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS

1.  DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR NORTHEAST FORECAST AREA ZONES 630-638



Upper trough transiting the area may bring a few showers this afternoon and tonight.  Then clouds decrease.  Friday will be mostly sunny and cool.  Although a ridge is building over the eastern Pacific, it will remain far enough west to allow mixing heights to rise to 5000 ft or more during the day.  Transport flow northwest to north through the day.  All in all, Friday should be a good smoke dispersal day.



    OUTLOOK (SATURDAY - MONDAY):



Ridge remains stationary to the west with cool northerly flow over the area.  A couple of minor disturbances drop south from Canada with some cloudy periods over the weekend.  Only the slightest chance of showers early Sunday.  Mixing remains good as the ridge stays too far to the west to stabilize the air mass.  Nighttime cooling will give poor mixing during the night and early morning.  Low-level wind flow mostly northerly through the period.



2.  DISPERSION



FRIDAY

Mixing height above 5000 ft through the afternoon.  Mixing height lowers to 1800 - 2800 ft in the evening.



Transport wind NW to N at 8 - 12 mph during the morning, and NNW to N at 11 - 21 mph in the afternoon and evening.



Surface wind NW to N at 5 - 9 mph during the morning, NW to N at 10 - 17 mph in the afternoon and NW to N at 6 - 11 mph during the evening.



OUTLOOK:



SATURDAY

Mixing height below 1000 ft early, rising to 4000 to 5000 ft by late morning, and above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind W to NW at 8 - 14 mph in the morning and WNW to NW at 18 - 30 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind SW to WNW at 6 - 10 mph during the morning, becoming NW to NNW at 15 - 25 mph in the afternoon.



SUNDAY

Mixing height 3200 to 4200 ft during the morning, rising above 5000 ft in the afternoon.  Transport wind NW to N at 4 - 8 mph.  Surface wind NW to NNE at 4 - 8 mph.



MONDAY

Mixing height below 1000 ft early, 3300 to 4300 ft by late morning, and above 5000 ft in the afternoon.  Transport wind N to NE at 6 - 12 mph.  Surface wind N to NE at 5 - 9 mph.



3.  BURNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR NORTHEAST OREGON ZONES 630-638

    The following considerations should be adhered to in addition to

    the requirements of the Oregon Smoke Management Plan. These

    Instructions are valid for burning conducted on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Delay ignitions until 9:00 AM.  Then avoid ignitions within 10 miles to the NW through NNE of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder through the night, avoid burning within at least 20 miles to the WSW through NNE in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.

    945-7401. Please call this number and not individual's

    numbers to discuss daily burning.  For large burns (over

    2000 tons) or burns extending over a considerable period,

    please request a special forecast.  Avoid calling before

    8 a.m. and between 2 to 3 p.m.
