SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS

1.  DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON ZONES 624 AND 625

An upper ridge builds over the region for sunny and dry weather.  Mixing heights should remain high for the area however and smoke dispersal conditions should be good.

OUTLOOK (FRIDAY-SUNDAY)

The outlook period will be mostly dry except during the passage of a weak front late Saturday which may produce some light rain.  Mixing heights should be high and winds generally southerly Friday and Saturday.  Longer range charts hint at a thermal trough developing off the SW Oregon coast on Sunday for a potential for some light east winds developing late in the weekend.

2.  DISPERSION

THURSDAY
Mixing height 2100 - 3100 ft during the morning.  Mixing height rises to above 5000 ft during the afternoon then lowers to 2900 - 3900 ft during the evening.

Transport wind SSW to SW at 9 - 15 mph.

Surface wind S to SW at 6 - 12 mph during the morning and afternoon.  Surface wind decreases to SSW to WSW at 4 - 8 mph during the evening.

OUTLOOK:

FRIDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 2000 - 3000 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind S to SW at 6 - 10 mph.  Surface wind SSE to SW at 4 - 8 mph.

SATURDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 1500 - 2500 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind light and variable.  Surface wind light and variable.

SUNDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 3000 - 4000 ft by late morning rising to 4000 - 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind light and variable.  Surface wind light and variable.

3.  BURNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZONES 624 AND 625 INCLUDING THE WALKER
    RANGE PORTION OF ZONE 624
This instruction is valid for burning conducted on Thursday, October 15, 2009.

Avoid ignitions within 12 miles to the SSW through WSW of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder significantly through the night avoid burning within at least 20 miles to the S through WSW in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.
