SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS
SALEM FORESTRY WEATHER CENTER

1.  DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON ZONES 624 AND 625

Upper level ridge continues building over the region through Friday morning before slipping to the east.  An approaching frontal system will increase southerly flow over the region and bring rather warm temperatures for this time of year.  Air mass will destabilize during the late morning to afternoon under the warming conditions.  Smoke dispersion will be mostly good.

    OUTLOOK (SATURDAY - MONDAY):

Frontal system and trough approach the region Saturday with an increasing chance of some light rain during the day.  Front and trough will move through by evening.  Ridge rebuilds somewhat on Sunday for a pleasant and dry day.  Air mass stabilizes.  Next front and trough move in Monday bringing a greater chance of moisture and destabilizing the air mass again.  Expect good smoke dispersion Saturday and Monday with less dispersion on Sunday.

2.  DISPERSION

FRIDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 1800 - 2800 ft by late morning.  Afternoon mixing height rises above 5000 ft then lowers to 1700 - 2700 ft during the evening.

Transport wind S to SW at 9 - 15 mph during the morning.  Transport wind shifts to SW to W at 8 - 12 mph during the afternoon then becomes light and variable and controlled by local terrain during the evening.

Surface wind S to SW at 6 - 10 mph during the morning.  Surface wind shifts to SW to W at 6 - 10 mph during the afternoon then becomes light and variable and controlled by local terrain during the evening.

OUTLOOK:

SATURDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 3000 - 4000 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind S to SW at 10 - 22 mph during the morning becoming SW to WSW at 22 - 40 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind S to SW at 6 - 12 mph during the morning becoming SW to WSW at 13 - 25 mph during the afternoon.

SUNDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 3000 - 4000 ft by late morning rising to 4000 - 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind S to SW at 5 - 9 mph during the morning becoming WSW to WNW at 4 - 8 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind light and variable.

MONDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 4000 - 5000 ft by late morning and through the afternoon.  Transport wind WSW to W at 12 - 24 mph during the morning becoming W to NW at 8 - 12 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind SW to W at 8 - 12 mph.

3.  BURNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZONES 624 AND 625 INCLUDING THE WALKER
    RANGE PORTION OF ZONE 624
This instruction is valid for burning conducted on Friday, October 16, 2009.

Avoid ignitions within 12 miles to the S through WNW of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder significantly through the night avoid burning within at least 20 miles to the S through WNW in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.
