DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 ** Stable Pattern - Poor Smoke Dispersal Conditions through Mid-Week ** Upper level heights hold strong in spite of a short wave moving into British Columbia on Monday. The atmosphere will remain very stable for poor smoke dispersal conditions except for possible brief marginal conditions mid afternoon. Mixing heights will remain low. Surface pressure gradients flat for light winds. Except for some morning fog in the valleys hazy fall sunshine will rule. OUTLOOK (TUESDAY-THURSDAY) The upper ridge builds on Tuesday and surface high pressure increases over the region. Generally sunny and pleasant weather will continue with light winds and poor smoke dispersal conditions. Wednesday will be a near repeat of Tuesday with very low mixing heights although winds aloft will increase a bit from the southwest. Real improvement will not occur until at least Thursday when smoke dispersal conditions will be fair with an upper trough approaching. This will cool temperatures aloft to help destabilize the atmosphere a bit. In addition transport winds will be stronger from the south by Thursday. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 ** Stable Pattern - Poor Smoke Dispersal Conditions Continue ** A weak pacific weather system moving through British Columbian and northwest Washington Monday and Monday evening will be well to the east of the area tomorrow. This will allow the upper level ridge to strengthen for very stable conditions over the region. Expect fair weather but low mixing heights, light winds, and generally poor smoke dispersal conditions. Winds will generally be light north or northeast except light south or southeast in the southern Cascades and the Rogue Valley. OUTLOOK (WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY) Wednesday is a transition day as the upper ridge axis shifts eastward. Expect little improvement in northern zones but higher mixing heights for marginal conditions in southern sections. Mixing heights should be near or below 2000 feet most areas in the north. Winds will be generally light east through southeast becoming light south through southwest late. By Thursday an upper trough will be approaching as the upper ridge axis moves out of the northern Rockies and into the northern plains. Winds aloft will be southerly and surface winds will pick up from the south. Rain will reach the northwest coast late and cover much of the region by Thursday night or Friday morning. Mixing conditions will be much improved. Friday expect cloudy, rainy weather most areas with good smoke dispersal conditions and a generally southwest through westerly wind. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 ** Improving Smoke Dispersal Conditions ** The upper ridge that has brought pleasant fall weather to the region the past few days will be shifting eastward Wednesday. By late afternoon the ridge axis will be on a line from Salt Lake City to eastern British Columbia. This is a slightly faster eastward movement than was previously thought. Mixing heights will be on the rise during the day. Maximum daytime mixing heights will still be fairly low in the north, but will be increasing through late afternoon and evening. With the weather pattern change wind directions will shift to southeast through south and become more southwest during the afternoon and evening most areas. OUTLOOK (THURSDAY-SATURDAY) On Thursday a major upper low will set up shop in the northern Gulf of Alaska. This will give southwesterly flow aloft to the region and surface winds should be nearly due south most of western Oregon. Mixing heights will be 5000 feet or above throughout the day for good smoke dispersal conditions. A pacific front spreads rain into northwest Oregon by afternoon and to all of western Oregon by midnight. Rain continues on Friday with good smoke dispersal conditions. Locally heavy rain is possible. Another Pacific front moves through during the day on Friday and smoke dispersal conditions remain favorable. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 A very deep upper level low will sit in the northern Gulf of Alaska on Thursday. This will support a very deep surface low in the same location. The surface low to the north will give the Pacific Northwest a strong south-to-north pressure gradient for strong south winds through much of Oregon. Strongest winds will be along the northern Oregon Coast where wind gusts to above 50mph are possible. A Pacific cold front will spread some light rain to the coast early. The rain will spread eastward, covering all of western Oregon by early evening. Rainfall amounts in the northern coast range could top two inches, with lesser amounts elsewhere. Cooler air aloft will destabilize the atmosphere and mixing heights will top 5000 feet throughout the day. That, combined with the brisk southerly winds will make for good smoke dispersal conditions all areas. OUTLOOK (FRIDAY-SUNDAY) The upper low remains in the northern Gulf of Alaska and a strong upper level jet (120mph) swings around the bottom of the low and into the Pacific Northwest. Expect periods of rain Friday, then an increase in the rain Friday night as another Pacific cold front moves through. This will be followed by another system Saturday evening. Showers will continue Sunday. Snow levels Saturday and Sunday will be in the 3500 to 4500 foot range. High mixing heights and occasional windy conditions mean good smoke dispersal conditions throughout the outlook period. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 A trough in the Gulf of Alaska will move closer to the Pacific Northwest giving southwesterly flow aloft over the region. The atmosphere should be fairly unstable and mixing heights will be close to 5000 feet or above for fair to good smoke dispersal conditions. Expect some scattered showers, mainly north. OUTLOOK (WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY) The upper level trough moves west to east across the Pacific Northwest during the day. Subsidence behind the trough starts to stabilize the atmosphere. Mixing heights will fall and smoke dispersal conditions become less favorable. By Thursday temporary ridging aloft suppresses mixing heights and smoke dispersal conditions further deteriorate. Mixing heights will be in the 1500 to 2000 foot range most areas. A forecast and instruction will be issued by approximately 8:00 AM Thursday morning. 1. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 Next upper level trough moves toward the coast bring rain to most of western Oregon. Amounts heavier in the north. Low level flow southwesterly early, shifting to more west to northwest in the afternoon. Air mass tends to destabilize as the trough nears but mixing still a bit limited in the afternoon. Daytime smoke dispersion fairly good but mixing worsens quickly in the evening. This could create problems for residual smoke from units near SSRAs. OUTLOOK (THURSDAY - SATURDAY) Unsettled weather continues to the weekend. Then on Saturday a ridge drifts over the Pacific Northwest. This will bring the mixing height down somewhat. Periods of rain or showers likely through Friday but with the ridging, Saturday should be mostly dry. Organized transport and fair mixing should facilitate burning through the period. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 Upper level low is moving by to the east this afternoon and will give way to a ridge moving in overnight and tomorrow. Air mass will remain quite cool aloft so stabilization will be slow. Expect mostly good mixing in the north while the south will stabilize quicker. Other than patchy morning fog, look for a mostly fair but cool day. Clouds increase during the afternoon, especially north, as a warm front will overrun the ridge. Moisture from the front may move into the north by late afternoon to early evening. Expect mostly fair to good smoke dispersion. OUTLOOK (SUNDAY - TUESDAY) Upper level ridge slides to the east by Sunday with continued clouds and light moisture over mainly the northern part of the state. Upper level trough in the eastern Pacific will slowly develop and move toward the region through Monday and Tuesday with the cold front not moving in until late Tuesday. Southerly wind flow will increase during the period, so even though the air mass will be fairly stable, smoke dispersion should be pretty good. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 Upper level ridge has built over the region today with a warm front running over the top and spreading clouds into mainly the northern part of the state. This front will spread some light rain over the coast, Coast Range and northern part of the state beginning this evening. Ridge will continue to move through tomorrow with the warm front sliding by to the north. Winds will increase from the S to SW as the warm front moves by. Air mass will be fairly stable with residual cool air trapped near the surface and warming aloft. Smoke dispersion should be fair however, as wind flow increases. OUTLOOK (MONDAY - WEDNESDAY) Upper level trough in the eastern Pacific moves in closer on Monday, a little faster than previously forecast. Wind flow will increase from the S to SW, becoming quite strong. This will mix out the air mass by Monday afternoon in most areas. Cold front will move in on Tuesday and slowly move through during the day and evening. Upper level trough will move through early Wednesday then will be followed by another front later Wednesday. With good mixing and strong transport and surface winds through much of the period, smoke dispersion will be mostly good to excellent. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 A Pacific cold front off the coast Sunday will slowly move into western Oregon during the day on Monday. Slowing the eastward movement of the front is a developing surface low pressure area that will track from the southwest to the northeast along the front and eventually move into Vancouver Island. This is a windy pattern for much of western Oregon. Rain will increase during the late afternoon and early evening period. With cool air aloft mixing heights will be fairly high and smoke dispersal conditions will be good to excellent. OUTLOOK (TUESDAY - THURSDAY) The front stalls across western Oregon on Tuesday for a wet day. A secondary weak front moves through early Wednesday and another strong Pacific cold front sweeps into the region Thursday morning with post frontal showers continuing into Friday. Expect brisk, generally southerly winds and good to excellent smoke dispersal conditions through the outlook period. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 An active Pacific cold front that was stalled over northwest Oregon on Monday will finally move eastward Tuesday. Rain with this system will occasionally be heavy. Late in the day, as the front moves east, some stabilization of the atmosphere is likely, thus burning should begin early. Smoke dispersal conditions should be good to excellent throughout most of the day, deteriorating slowly in the late afternoon. OUTLOOK (WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY) Post frontal showers continue Wednesday. Mixing heights will be a bit lower than on Tuesday, but smoke dispersal conditions should remain moderate. However, warm overrunning conditions ahead of the next Pacific cold front will put a lid on mixing heights. There is model disagreement on the timing of that next front. My best estimate is that it will stall similarly to the system on Monday/Tuesday and not reach the area until Friday. That means the most stable conditions will likely be Thursday, with improving smoke dispersal conditions again on Friday. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 A Deep upper level trough in the northern Gulf of Alaska continues to influence Pacific Northwest weather through the rest of the week. Weather systems spin around the bottom of this feature through Saturday. Computer models show a surge of moisture during the morning over most of western Oregon, then some drying in the afternoon. Rainfall totals should be light. Mixing heights will be generally favorable for good smoke dispersal and transport winds mostly southerly. OUTLOOK (THURSDAY-SATURDAY) A stronger system than the one for Wednesday stalls along the coast on Thursday. The pattern is similar to the pattern for Monday and Tuesday but likely winds will not be as strong. Models have been a bit inconsistent on exactly where this system stalls a 100 mile error in positioning means the difference in heavy rain or not much rain at all. Thus low confidence in forecast for Thursday. The front should drag through during the day on Friday. Mixing heights may be suppressed with warm overrunning aloft on Thursday but should be 5000 feet or better on Friday. On Saturday a warm front moves through for additional rain but smoke dispersal conditions should remain fair. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 Warm front is approaching the region this afternoon and will increase clouds over mainly the north half of the state this afternoon and evening. Snow level will rise to 6000 - 7000 ft. Rain will likely start on the north coast by this evening. This front will be similar to the one on Monday and Tuesday with the trough stalling off the coast for a day. Thus expect rain and wind over the northwest corner of the state tomorrow and mostly just clouds and windy conditions elsewhere. Strong winds will mix out the stable air mass overnight and bring good smoke dispersion during the day. OUTLOOK (FRIDAY - SUNDAY) Warm front moves by to the north by Friday with the cold front and trough approaching Friday morning. Rain will be on the increase while the winds start to slacken. Cold front moves through by Friday evening with cold air following and lowering the snow level to near 3000 ft Friday night. Upper level trough moves through Friday night to Saturday morning. Another front and trough move in later Saturday with the trough passing through early Sunday with a ridge following closely behind. Expect good mixing and smoke dispersion through the period. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 Warm front has pushed off to the northeast with the region in the warm sector of the frontal system. Cold front will swing into the state overnight tonight and push through Friday morning to afternoon. Expect plenty of rain and wind with the heaviest amounts of moisture over the southern part of the state. Colder air will move in with the front, and the following trough. The snow level will lower to 3000 ft by late morning to early afternoon and down to 2000 ft Friday night. Air mass will remain mostly unstable and with decent wind flow, will make for excellent smoke dispersion. OUTLOOK (SATURDAY - MONDAY) Minor ridging moves in Saturday morning but will quickly disappear as the next front and trough come racing in from the Pacific. Expect moisture to increase during the late morning to early afternoon. Temperatures will moderate some with the snow level rising to 4000 - 5000 ft Saturday evening. Moisture decreases Sunday as another weak ridge builds in. A warm front will ride through the ridge and increase moisture again later Sunday to early Monday. Overall, expect a very progressive weather pattern, keeping the air mass mostly unstable and dispersion good to excellent. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 After a wet and stormy period the Pacific Northwest will finally settle down and dry out for a few days as high pressure aloft shunts any storms to the north of Oregon. The only exception will be a weak system that will drag across northwest Oregon late Monday for some light rain. Otherwise subsiding air aloft will stabilize the atmosphere and lead to deteriorating smoke dispersal conditions through mid week. Winds will be generally southeast to east except light and variable in the Rogue Valley and southwest Oregon. OUTLOOK (MONDAY-THURSDAY) The upper ridge over the area strengthens Tuesday. Overnight surface inversions will break for only poor to marginal smoke dispersal conditions during the afternoon. On Wednesday the ridge axis moves east and upper flow shifts southwesterly. However the ridge still dominates and burning conditions will be poor at best. Recommend against any planned burning for Wednesday. The ridge axis finally moves east and an upper trough approaches Thanksgiving day. A Pacific Cold front moves into western Oregon in the afternoon for improving smoke dispersal conditions. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 ** Unfavorable burning situation due to very poor smoke dispersion ** An upper ridge of high pressure remains over the region on Tuesday producing stagnant conditions with light winds and low mixing heights. Smoke dispersal conditions will be poor and recommend against burning Tuesday and Wednesday. Mixing heights will generally be in the 1000-2000 foot range. OUTLOOK (WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY) On Wednesday the upper ridge axis shifts east but the ridge itself still dominates Pacific Northwest weather. Low mixing heights and light winds continue. By Thanksgiving Day the ridge will be off to the east and an upper level trough will approach. A weakening Pacific cold front will spread rain into western Oregon late in the day. Smoke dispersal conditions will improve, especially in the south. Friday looks showery with another weak Pacific cold front late in day. Expect fair to good smoke dispersal conditions. 2. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 An upper level ridge of high pressure still dominates Pacific Northwest weather on Wednesday. The ridge axis will be on a line from central Nevada, across northeast Oregon and into northern Idaho. Upper flow will be from the southwest but any rain will be well to the north of Oregon. Mixing heights will remain low and winds generally light with a tendency to southerly through southeasterly. Smoke dispersal conditions will be poor to marginal. OUTLOOK (THURSDAY-SATURDAY) On Thanksgiving Day the upper ridge moves east and an upper trough slowly approaches the Pacific Northwest. A Pacific cold front will move towards Oregon; however computer models differ a bit on the timing of the onset of precipitation. It appears that a wave will form on the front and slow its eastward progress. Rain will reach the northwestern corner of Oregon first, then spread south and east. Likely the northwest coast will see rain early in the day with the rain spreading to all of western Oregon by evening. Cooler air aloft should improve dispersal conditions Thursday and Friday. By Saturday temporary high pressure again takes over for stabilization and deteriorating smoke dispersal conditions. 2. DISPERSION Zone 601, 602, 603 and 612 (North Coast Range): MORNING Mixing height 1000 - 2000 ft. Transport wind SSW to SW at 10 - 20 mph. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR THE WESTERN OREGON AREA FORECAST ZONES 601-623 ** Generally unfavorable smoke dispersal conditions through the week ** An upper level ridge in the eastern Pacific and Gulf of Alaska will dominate weather this week. At the surface flow will go offshore as a strong surface high pressure area drops out of Canada and heads towards the northern Rockies. With subsiding air aloft mixing heights will be suppressed. Expect very light winds, especially in SW Oregon where the National Weather Service has issued an Air Stagnation Advisory at least through Friday. Poor smoke dispersal conditions on Tuesday will further deteriorate Wednesday and Thursday. OUTLOOK (TUESDAY-FRIDAY) The upper ridge axis noses over into southeast Alaska and western Canada. This will give light northerly flow aloft and keep atmospheric conditions very stable through the week. Expect unfavorable burning conditions most areas at least through Friday. 2.
