<div align="left">For patients, providers, and medical educators in southern and central Illinois' rural communities, a Springfield-based telehealth network is helping to increase access to quality medical care and training. Established in 2001 through grants from HRSA and Southern Illinois University's Rural Health Initiative, the network currently links more than 149 sites in 101 communities throughout the state.</div>
<div align="left"> <br>The program was begun at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, with the goal of, as executive director Deborah Seale explained, "bring[ing] the state's healthcare resources to central and southern Illinois." Currently, the Springfield-based staff of seven facilitates 46 weekly videoconferences with participants across the state, </div>
<div align="left">with the assistance of trained coordinators at each remote site. Twenty of these videoconferences are geared towards providers, featuring professors from various departments within the medical school. Each week, these educational conferences reach more than 90 people statewide. Said Dr. David Steward, SIU professor and chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, "It's a good way to reach people who might not otherwise be able to participate in these conferences." </div>
