INTERNET - Reader Mode Gives You Clean Webpages

Intermediate

[A person sits at a cluttered desk in front of two computer monitors, working intently. The screens display code and a website. Office supplies, a phone, and a mug are visible on the desk.]

Do you enjoy reading local news online? It is a great way to learn about what is happening in your area and there are plenty of independent groups producing local info. But have you ever tried to read a news article online…only for the ads to take over the page?

There are banners and pop-ups.

It’s hard to find where the article even starts, right? By the time you get to the story, you’re frustrated.

There’s a simple fix built right into your web browser. It’s called Reader Mode.

Reader Mode strips away the extra noise on a page so you can focus on the text. No ads or distractions. Just the article.

When you turn it on, it can:

· Remove ads and sidebars
· Center the main text
· Adjust spacing for easier reading
· Let you change the font size and background

Think of it like turning a busy webpage into a clean, digital book. Some browsers will even do text-to-speech!

How to Turn on Reader Mode

Most browsers support Reader Mode, but the steps look a little different depending on which one you use.

[A red arrow points to a three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of a web browser window, next to a star icon and several app extension icons.]
Microsoft Edge

In Edge, Reader Mode is called Immersive Reader. To activate it:

1. Click on the circle with three dots in the address bar.
2. Select Immersive Reader.
3. Edit your preferences for the reader in the top right.

You can also press F9 to turn Immersive Reader on or off in Edge.

Google Chrome

In Chrome, this feature is called Reading Mode. To open it:

1. Open the settings menu by clicking the three dots in the top right of the browser window.
2. If you don’t see Reading Mode in the menu, choose More tools.
3. Select Reading Mode.
4. Edit your preferences at the top of the Reading mode window.

NOTE: In some versions of Chrome, you may also see a side panel icon (a split rectangle) in the top right. Clicking it will open Reading Mode.

[A toolbar with four icons: a list icon circled in red, a box with an arrow, a download symbol, and a star, all on a light gray background.]
Mozilla Firefox

Firefox calls it Reader view. To switch your mode:

1. In the address bar, click the icon that looks like a printed page.
2. Edit your preferences in the tool bar to the left of the text.

You can also press F9 in Firefox to turn on or off Reader view.

CAUTION: Reader Mode doesn’t work on every page. Some websites don’t have a clear article structure, so the option may not appear. If you don’t see the Reader Mode when you follow the above steps, the page may not support it.

Communications: Engaging

A Quiet Invite

Are you ever in a situation at work (or home) where discussions occur, but one person is consistently not participating? They are shy or quiet. They tend to not speak up unless asked.

Here’s a simple technique that works.

When you know in advance of a meeting or discussion … let the quieter person know you’d value their perspective on a specific point. Keep it light… “I’d love your take when we get to [insert your topic] because you often notice things others miss.”

Then, when the moment comes, create a natural opening for them to speak:

“Chris… you had an interesting angle on this earlier… would you share it?”

...or if you want to be less specific:

"Tonja, what are your thoughts on this?" or "Do you have any ideas you want to share?

Two things happen. They’re prepared… and they’re not put on the spot. Over time, this builds confidence and signals to the whole group that every voice matters.

The key here is thoughtful invitation.
