[Utilities_fit] Utilities FIT Update, Spring Framework Forum, 2023 GIS in Action Conference

Also, save the date for the Spring Framework Forum, April 13, 2023. This will be held at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center& Museum, out by The Dalles. Registration details and agenda will follow soon.

A quick update on FIT activities-the data element inventory that we worked to complete in last year's meetings is being finalized with respect to the recommendations made for adding, removing, and/or changing the data element list. Once that is done the recommendations/inventory for all FIT themes will be presented to the Oregon Geographic Information Council (OGIC) for discussion and decision making.

FYI, the new framework coordinator is Melissa Foltz ('FOLTZ Melissa * DAS' Melissa.FOLTZ at das.oregon.gov<mailto:Melissa.FOLTZ at das.oregon.gov>), and she's doing a great job getting up to speed with all the framework themes and their respective issues.

A couple of data developments since our meetings last year:

The Oregon PUC has begun collecting much more detailed data from electric utilities. More specifically, they are now requesting all pole, overhead line, substation, recloser, high fire risk zones, and other wildfire mitigation asset data. Obviously this is due to developing mandates around wildfire and utility safety, but it bodes well for any effort to aggregate statewide electric utility data.

Also, as part of the federal funding available to states for broadband access expansion and equity, a large effort is planned by Business Oregon (the State economic development agency) to collect and aggregate statewide broadband-related data. Data about general broadband service areas and service levels appears to already exist from the FCC, but will likely become more comprehensive and increase in accuracy and availability as a result of this effort, so this is great news for future potential aggregation of communication data.

I think both of these developments really illustrate the changing landscape of GIS data availability, and I predict we will see rapid changes around the issue over the next few years.
