We also distribute copies of the book to libraries and schools for book discussions. The past few years we’ve had additional funding to offer enrichment programs based on the book at public libraries throughout the summer.

<p class="MsoNormal">In Iowa, our state-wide early literacy program is not quite parallel to what you have described, but I'll share it with you anyway. It's called the Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award (<a href="http://www.bridgetoreading.com/">http://www.bridgetoreading.com/</a>),
so named this because its origins were in Dubuque, a city along the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa. It began as a grant-supported local project and is now a state-wide children's choice award, managed by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library
Association. A committee of librarians, preschool teachers and early literacy specialists choose ten picture books each year in August that are chosen specifically for their suitability for read-alouds with groups of children, and the youngest of our citizens
then vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in the spring. Libraries use the list for collection development, and some of our larger communities provide copies of the books to their local preschools and daycare centers.<o:p></o:p></p>

for a number of years)--but not for younger children at this point.<o:p></o:p></p>
