<div dir="ltr">Hi Cathy and YSCON,<div><br></div><div>In Iowa, our state-wide early literacy program is not quite parallel to what you have described, but I'll share it with you anyway. It's called the Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award (<a href="http://www.bridgetoreading.com/">http://www.bridgetoreading.com/</a>), so named this because its origins were in Dubuque, a city along the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa. It began as a grant-supported local project and is now a state-wide children's choice award, managed by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association. A committee of librarians, preschool teachers and early literacy specialists choose ten picture books each year in August that are chosen specifically for their suitability for read-alouds with groups of children, and the youngest of our citizens then vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in the spring. Libraries use the list for collection development, and some of our larger communities provide copies of the books to their local preschools and daycare centers.</div><div><br></div><div>We also have a program that is developing through the Iowa Center for the Book (<a href="http://www.iowacenterforthebook.org/">http://www.iowacenterforthebook.org/</a>) that is a one book, one state read for teens (we've had one for adults for a number of years)--but not for younger children at this point.</div><div><br></div><div>Best wishes,</div><div><br></div><div>Merri</div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br clear="all"><div><div class="gmail_signature" data-smartmail="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div><span style="font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif"><font size="4" color="#0b5394"><b>Merri Monks</b></font></span><span style="font-size:14pt;font-family:"copperplate gothic bold",sans-serif;color:rgb(5,92,144)"> </span><span style="color:rgb(89,89,89)"><font face="Copperplate Gothic Light, sans-serif">Youth Services Consultant</font></span><br></div><div><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89);font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif"><b>State Library of Iowa</b></span><span style="font-size:12.8px;font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif;color:rgb(89,89,89)"> |</span><span style="font-size:12.8px;font-family:"copperplate gothic bold",sans-serif;color:rgb(89,89,89)"> </span><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89)"><font face="Copperplate Gothic Light, sans-serif">Des Moines Office<br></font></span><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89)">515.281.7572 | </span><a href="mailto:Merri.Monks@iowa.gov" target="_blank">Merri.Monks@iowa.gov</a><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px"><font color="#595959">1112 E. have titles either with “Michigan” or “reading” or “books” somewhere in it, & <i>
Michigan Reads! </i>has never really stood out or had a clear meaning. <i>Michigan Reads!</i> is the early literacy program that we implement in March for Reading Month. We’re revamping the program to focus more on public libraries, providing them with multiple
copies of the book and a storytime outline specifically designed for outreach. Possible titles: “Every Child Ready to Read in Michigan” (we focus on the 5 practices), or “Reach Out & Read: Michigan.”
