<div dir="ltr">Danielle has described very closely what we do in Iowa. I also have a youth services advisory council, with whom I meet about three times a year, twice via Zoom and once face-to-face, on the same day that the Iowa Library Association sponsors Library Legislative Day in Des Moines (so that those who choose can attend the reception and mix and mingle with legislators).<div><br></div><div>The advisory council's primary function is to help me to discern needed topics for continuing education, including those for breakout sessions for our biennial conference for youth services librarians in our public libraries, Kids First, and to help choose the four plenary session speakers for that conference. They also assist in choosing which of the proposals for those breakout sessions we'll include at the conference. The members are, as much as possible, representatives of both teen and children's librarians from the six geographically-based districts in Iowa--a challenge at times to find equal representation from three of the six districts that are sparsely populated, comprised mostly of small, rural, one-person libraries, and as far as four hours from Des Moines. Serving on the council also provides an opportunity for leadership development, that has provided a stepping stone for some members to involvement in other groups in the Iowa Library Association or ALA (one of our members also serves as Iowa's Councillor with ALA), and presenting break-out sessions at Kids First has resulted in some of our presenters going on to present at national conferences. Fostering professional development and cultivating library leaders have been among the most important facets of my work in my eight years as Iowa's youth services consultant, and the advisory council has served in both capacities.</div><div><br></div><div>Merri</div><div><br></div><div><div><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_signature" data-smartmail="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div><span style="font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif"><font size="4" color="#0b5394"><b>Merri Monks</b></font></span><span style="font-size:14pt;font-family:"copperplate gothic bold",sans-serif;color:rgb(5,92,144)"> </span><span style="color:rgb(89,89,89)"><font face="Copperplate Gothic Light, sans-serif">Youth Services Consultant</font></span><br></div><div><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89);font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif"><b>State Library of Iowa</b></span><span style="font-size:12.8px;font-family:"copperplate gothic light",sans-serif;color:rgb(89,89,89)"> |</span><span style="font-size:12.8px;font-family:"copperplate gothic bold",sans-serif;color:rgb(89,89,89)"> </span><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89)"><font face="Copperplate Gothic Light, sans-serif">Des Moines Office<br></font></span><span style="font-size:12.8px;color:rgb(89,89,89)">515.281.7572 | </span><a href="mailto:Merri.Monks@iowa.gov" target="_blank">Merri.Monks@iowa.gov</a><br style="font-size:12.8px"><span style="font-size:12.8px"><font color="#595959">1112 E. issues, but SRP is a large piece of what they do. <u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I missed the monthly meeting yesterday, but just read over the notes. It seems like a lot of you hold trainings, but I am curious to learn more about statewide Summer Reading Committees. Hoping to have something up and running for next
year. I have reached out to a few people about this topics but have not received anything back – probably because they’re busy with last minute summer maneuvering!
