Facility managers and agency sustainability staff:

I hope this note finds you all well.

In these times when your buildings are likely experiencing light and/or intermittent use for an extended period, we encourage you to help save energy and money by keeping your eyes open for office equipment/devices/lights that are on but don’t need to be, and by powering off, unplugging or putting to sleep what isn’t needed. Equipment you might be especially mindful of includes:

· Full size refrigerators that can be emptied/consolidated

· Printers/copiers (switch off or unplug)

· Coffee machines and other break room appliances (unplug)

· Vending machines (unplug)

· Lights

· Blinds on windows adjacent to vacant spaces (best closed)

· Approved space heaters or other personal heating devices (unplugged)

· Approved mini-fridges (unplugged)

If you have not already done so, you are also encouraged to adjust HVAC scheduling.

If in doubt whether something should be shut off and by whom, consult with your department head, building manager or facilities person.

We also encourage you to work with your IT department to ensure computers and monitors are either powered off or programmed with sleep settings as appropriate.

And for those working from home:

· Are you opening/closing windows in order to minimize the runtime of furnace/A/C systems?

· Are your heating and cooling setpoints (and schedules) appropriate? Would an extra layer of clothing enable you to lower your heating set point a bit?

· Are you regularly sweeping your home to shut off lights at end of day?

Please feel free to amend this message to meet your agency’s situation if you plan to send it on. Attached is an operator’s checklist from Energy Trust for low-occupancy situations you may find helpful.

Thank for all of your efforts to keep energy and utility costs in mind as we navigate these unprecedented times.

Best,

Dave
