Agency sustainability champions:

We've discovered a great new and free service to eliminate paper junk mail. If you regularly receive unwanted catalogues, brochures or other mail pieces, this service is for you.

It's called Waste Free Mail<https://wastefreemail.com/> and it replaces with a one-stop web link all of the other junk mail opt-out services. The organization that runs this service is paid by the catalog producers who want to cut their own costs and don't want to send unwanted or undeliverable mail.

Here's how it works:

1. Go to https://wastefreemail.com/ReferralFormInd.jsp

2. Enter your contact details as prompted.

3. Start typing the name of the source of the mailing in the "Mailing Company Name" box. Many companies are already pre-populated in the database, so you may see the name pop up. If so, select it. If not, just complete typing the name.

4. Select "Reason for Referral." Your options are:

a. No longer there: If you are an administrator who gets lots of mail for employees no longer at your agency, enter their name here and you can stop their mail.

b. Unsubscribe yourself

c. Receive mail electronically

d. Change your address

5. Hit "Submit Referral" at the bottom.

That's it.

Note that you only need to upload an image of the address if the mailer is not already in the database. Once you add their name, they will be added to the master database and pull-down list.

This should help our agencies reduce our waste stream, and cut down on time needed to sort and deliver unwanted mail. You can also use this service at home, any you can download their app to a smart phone or tablet.

You can use the service now, or any time you get an unwanted mail piece. Instead of simply tossing it in the recycling bin, make a note to opt out of future mail on the site.

Finally, if you know there are several people in your division getting the same unwanted junk mail, you can do a group opt out. Waste Free Mail can help you do that. Their staff are available by phone or email to answer questions. And, if you are a larger agency with a central mailroom that distributes out to several locations, you may want to check out the University of North Carolina's "stop junk mail" page for an example of policy and tools they are using to cut the junk out of their mail: https://enterprises.unc.edu/mail/waste-free-mail-program/ .

Please let me know how it works and if there are any questions. And please forward to your agency's staff as all can benefit from this.

Thank you,

Dave
