April 22 is Earth Day, reminding us to care for the planet that sustains us. But the Oregon Sustainability Act<https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/bills_laws/ors/ors184.html> defines "sustainability" as using, developing and protecting resources in a manner that enables people to meet current needs and provides that future generations can also meet future needs from the joint perspective of environmental, economic and community objectives. While that's a mouthful, it reminds us - particularly in light of 2020 events - that to thrive on this planet means taking care of the environment and people.

What does this look like your everyday life? At home, you might use a green checklist<https://www.cdc.gov/sustainability/lifestyle/index.htm> or even a personal carbon calculator<https://www.oregon.gov/deq/residential/pages/calculate-your-carbon-footprint.aspx> to lower your environmental impacts. You can measure how your driving<https://mapmyemissions.com/home> affects the planet, or better yet, hop on your bike or transit. It also means thinking about how your choices affect equity, fairness and opportunity for other people, from the food you eat<https://www.fairtradeamerica.org/shop-fairtrade/fairtrade-products/?gclid=CjwKCAjwmv-DBhAMEiwA7xYrdzHPT1oULlhEPHW8Q4LZGPVbu48NYOzDhClP6E0TFkZs3ZMJud3xbxoCZSEQAvD_BwE> to the businesses you support<https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/trip-ideas/discover-portlands-black-owned-businesses/>, or where you invest your money. Sometimes, it might mean standing up and speaking out when you witness injustices.

This Earth Day, as we emerge from a tumultuous year, we can begin to heal through thoughtful choices, practicing kindness for the planet, but also kindness for each other. Let's work together toward a more sustainable world.

Please feel free to re-purpose this for your internal agency communications.

Be well,

Dave
