[kids-lib] summer reading copyright and other issues

Please add me to the list of Oregon librarians who want to continue creating reading logs and certificates that meet my specific needs AND use the wonderful clip art that gives everything such a professional look. The freedom to design my own materials is VERY important.
I purchased over $800 of Highsmith summer reading products, but I design and print my own YA reading records. No more than 50 of them. I can't imagine this presents any kind of financial hardship to Highsmith or the Cooperative.
I enjoy being part of the Summer Reading Cooperative, and hope to continue having access to the manual and graphics, and being able to order incentives, posters, and other great stuff from the catalog.
Thanks to everyone who articulates the issues and problems so well!

Subject: Re: [kids-lib] summer reading copyright and other issues
Since the issue of copyright restrictions on the CSLP graphics was
raised, I have been mulling over how to proceed. I do not see a way we will be
able to create the Summer Reading hand-outs we need and comply with the
copyright requirements. Please add me to the growing list of Oregon librarians
who feel the copyright restrictions create an untenable situation for libraries.
Libraries do not all have the same summer reading programs, which means some
of Highsmith’s products, such as reading logs and certificates, will not
work for us. I am grateful to CSLP for the great graphics which we would not
otherwise have, and am pleased to have the opportunity to buy ready-made incentive
items from Highsmith, but it is more important that we have the freedom to
design our own programs.
Thank you so much, Katie and Paige, for representing our collective
view on this.

are exactly the things that your state representative (Katie Anderson)and
Summer Reading Chair need to know when bring our concerns to the national CSLP
conference. While there was not much discussion this year at the meeting
regarding copyright issues and reading logs, perhaps that was because many of
the State representatives were unaware of how many libraries prefer to create
their own reading logs and/or certificates using the CSLP artwork. This
definitely sounds like something that will be brought for discussion by your
Oregon representatives at this next year’s meeting and is exactly the
kind of feedback we need to have for representing Oregon at the CSLP national
meetings. The past years that I have attended, Oregon representatives have successfully
lobbied for the themes, slogans, and other items of interest that Oregon
librarians have expressed as being their top concerns so please know that your
voices are being heard and that your state representative (Katie Anderson) and
Summer Reading Chair are definitely working hard to make sure that Oregon is
please remember if you are passionate about these issues, you are always able
to volunteer for one of the CSD board positions including that of CSD Summer
Reading Chair and Chair elect which is the position that attends the annual
Collaborative Summer Library Programs meeting.
Summer Reading Chair 2010
All Oregon public, volunteer, and tribal libraries
are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), and receive a
free summer reading manual. To get the most out of your membership, create an
account on the CSLP website (http://www.cslpreads.org/)
and you will be able to access additional summer reading resources. CSLP
membership dues and manual fees are paid for by the State Library with LSTA
funds. Summer reading manuals are distributed by OLA's Children's Services
