The University of Portland, a private Catholic institution of higher learning, is seeking an Acquisitions Technical Assistant to join the staff of the W.W. Clark Memorial Library. The library has a team oriented and rapidly changing environment, and the position requires flexibility and a spirit of cooperation within the team and the library as a whole.
Primary responsibilities: Acquisitions: Ordering firm and standing orders: books, videos and audio recordings, creating and maintaining order records using Innovative Interfaces, Ordering electronic books, creating and maintaining order records, assisting with licensing and verifying access. Receiving these materials using Innovative Interfaces and sending invoices on for payment. Selecting appropriate vendors for orders and maintaining working relationship with library vendors. Claiming and associated order file maintenance. Cataloging: Precataloging searching on OCLC as part of the acquisitions verification process. Copy cataloging of monographs for materials that have corresponding Library of Congress cataloging using standard library protocols, OCLC, and the library's Innovative Interfaces system. May train and take lead with 1-2 student employees and assist other departmental student employees in the absence of their lead or supervisor.
Required Education/Skills/Knowledge: Education or training beyond high school required. Exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills - both written and oral. Working knowledge of standard library systems and procedures as they apply to the position including the acquisitions and cataloging subsystems of an integrated library system (preferably III). OCLC, and microcomputer applications necessary to the position, e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, Web based resources.Capacity to work positively with all members of the library team as well as vendor representatives. Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years pertinent library experience, supervisory experience preferred. Physical requirements of the job (e.g.: moving from floor to floor, moving equipment, working in the book stacks): Occasional lifting of heavy loads; ability to push fully loaded book cart, moving from floor to floor.

Management and oversight of the OCOM library budget.

Oversight of circulation and cataloging functions.
Development and periodic review of library policies and procedures.
Coordination of library information technology services, in conjunction with the OCOM information technology staff.
Participation in ongoing institutional self study processes, and periodic assessment of the quality of library services.
Periodic provision of instructional services to faculty and students.
Participation in academic decision making as a member of the college's Academic Steering Committee.

Qualifications: Education: MLS (or equivalent) degree from an ALA accredited program is required at the time of appointment.

Experience: The ideal candidate will have significant experience managing a small specialized library, preferably with a healthcare emphasis. Teaching experience preferred. College or university library experience highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be proactive, creative and service-oriented. This is an upper level librarian position and will primarily manage the collection development of adult materials. The library circulated 1.9 million items in 2006-2007. Other duties may include reader's advisory programming, public service desk responsibilities, and community outreach.
Staying abreast of trends in librarianship and developments in the publishing industry will be vital for the candidate in this position. Effective management of diverse resources, technology, clientele, and situations requiring independent decision-making and action will be essential. The Tulane Music Collection was partially destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The role of the Music Acquisitions librarian is to assist with purchasing items to replace lost materials and to rebuild the Music Collection into a world class collection. The librarian will work closely with the Tulane Library faculty and Music Faculty to select materials in both print and non print formats that will support the Music Curriculum at Tulane University. A strong background in Music Collection Development is a plus. Experience with the Voyager Acquisition system or similar ILS is required. In addition the successful candidate will need to be able to work in a Team Environment as part of the Tulane Recovery Center Team.
