The University of Oregon Library, Metadata Services and Digital Projects unit, invites applications for full-time Quality Control Specialist (Library Technician 3) for the National Digital Newspaper Program. This is a limited duration, grant funded position expected to last two years. This is a classified position represented by SEIU local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union. University of Oregon positions that are at least half-time are eligible for excellent benefits, including health and dental, employer-paid retirement, and tuition benefits for employee or an eligible dependent, sick and vacation leave.
Salary: $13.23 - $18.75 per hour.
Qualifications: Three years of library experience as a Library Technician, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience. In addition, this position requires a least three years of recent experience in academic library setting; ability to work with efficiency, productivity, and attention to detail; ability to remember and follow complicated procedures; understanding of properties of various digital formats, their use and value; knowledge of project management and methods of handling/tracking inventory; familiarity with XML; accurate keyboarding (moderate speed acceptable); good interpersonal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures; knowledge of library databases and digital asset management systems; experience using scanning and other related software; demonstrated experience in quality control or proofreading; ability to operate effectively within team environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: This position plans and coordinates the project logistics involved in the digitization of newspaper microfilm, provides quality control on deliverables, including performing quality assurance on images, metadata, XML files, and Optical Character Recognized (OCR) text. Duties include: Examining, in detail, the accuracy of title identification in correspondence with appropriate CONSER cataloging record(s), issue and volume order, quality of images, accuracy of Optical Character recognition, accuracy of highly complex METS XML structure and appropriate information adhering to the NDNP Technical Standards using the digital validation viewer tool issued by the Library of Congress to see structural information. Coordinating microfilm samples and shipments with Image Services Center (ISC) by researching UO microfilm holdings, completeness of issues/pages; inputting quality readings from ISC into format for vendor and Library of Congress, overseeing duplication of microfilm reels in accordance with agreed time schedule for vendor and LC. Liaise between vendor and project team by communicating on problems, progress, and technical issues of both microfilm quality and digital deliverables; coordinating shipments, delivery schedule for items, and payment schedule with vendor. Shipping and tracking deliverables, including keeping a thorough inventory of where microfilm reels and portable hard drives are in project progress and geographic location.

Research Associate/Scientific Data Curator

Description: The Scientific Data Curator serves on the Data Curation Team for the Networking Research Resources Across America project. Under the supervision of the Lead Data Curator, s/he will work with the Data Entry Technologists at all sites and the Central Project Team to structure and annotate resource metadata, review data submissions, contribute to the development of ontologies and data standards, and engage in standard annotation tasks.
Qualifications: Required: BA/BS in a bioscience/biomedical field; Masters in informatics/information science (or equivalent); 3 years research experience (including research experience concurrent with academic study); strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; broad knowledge of medical/scientific terminology; technical capabilities including excellent computer skills with the ability to perform detailed work requiring sustained attention in a proficient manner. Preferred: Experience with principles and practice of biomedical informatics.

Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks candidates for the position of Project Archivist / Cataloger to work on site at an ongoing project in New Orleans, LA. Working with both restored and undamaged materials, the Project Archivist / Cataloger oversees the remaining Katrina recovery process for archives and will create MARC records in Voyager and OCLC for all processed collections. In addition, the incumbent in this position will design an EAD implementation plan and will ensure that all existing and new MARC records conform to necessary standards for EAD cross-walking and implementation.
Primary Responsibilities: Analyze the level and quality of existing MARC records for archival materials. Review and assess finding aids and other access tools for all processed collections. Work in conjunction with the client to develop a workable cataloging timetable and priorities. Create original MARC records in OCLC and Voyager to full level for the description of archival materials ensuring the compliance of data with EAD data fields and crosswalks. Provide the client with EAD crosswalks and an implementation proposal. Potentially create more detailed finding aids for processed archival in collections with minimal finding aids. Oversee the archival processing tasks associated both with the Katrina Recovery Project and with the cataloging of collections. Keep the Project Manager informed of all issues relating to the archives piece of the project. Participate in the management and oversight of elements of the Katrina Recovery Project. Supervise Archival Cataloging Technician and other archival project staff.
Minimum Qualifications: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends, standards, and practices of archival services in academic libraries. Original and copy cataloging of archival materials mandatory. Experience working with MARC bibliographic and holdings records mandatory.
Strong knowledge of Encoded Archival Descriptions (EAD) mandatory. Experience with physical processing of archives or access provision mandatory. Experience working in Integrated Library Systems, with a strong preference for Voyager. Understanding of Document Type Definitions (DTD). Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven production environment with changing priorities. Supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience creating EAD cross-walks strongly preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of ISO/NISO, metadata, and W3C standards.
Two years professional experience in archives at an institution of higher education.
