Because of the discussion about “weapons prohibited signage” from mid-December, I thought some of you might be interested in an article in the January/February 2014 issue of American Libraries. It’s on page 16 and is called “Taking Aim at the Reality of Guns in Libraries.”

Since my library is a department of the city, the law applies. Libraries that are not directly affiliated with a city or county may be in a different situation.

From an informational standpoint, I would comment that definitions are a very important thing in state statutes.
For example, buildings that are referenced in this statute are described here:.
http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/166.360 (definitions for ORS 166.360 – 166.380)
See this on the Oregon Legislature’s website at:

As always, one should refer to their organization’s legal counsel for advice and details.

Weapons are prohibited in public buildings as per ORS 166.370 - http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/166.370 We have a sign posted referencing that statute.

When I was working in Idaho, people would carry guns into the public library. My director said there wasn't anything that could be done about this because if they were licensed, they had a legal right to carry the weapons. The only action I was told would be okay was to not permit the guns in the children's room. I imagine that what kind of signs you can put up is dependent upon where you are located. I agree that checking with your attorney is good route to go.

Talk with your attorney, putting a sign up can be a really "loaded" action.

Our city council had to remove theirs as our state representative is very pro gun and fought them on it and won. I don't know the details, but...
