[Libs-Or] kindle 4 non-touch

Hi Dan-

You should be able to set parental controls on the device to disable purchases from the store on your account, with a password- note for this, you may need to update the Kindles first as we received a Kindle a month or two ago that did not come with the update that was released over the summer that made this possible (4.1.0). Updating is pretty easy, though. With parental controls you do not have to deregister, which is what we were doing previously to 4.1.0. You can also put the devices into airplane mode before they are checked out which turns off the wi-fi and helps conserve battery (this may have come with 4.1.0 as well- I can't remember). It's a little obnoxious to figure out these steps the first time around, but if I can provide any more info please feel free to email me at jutriest at linfield.edu .

Good News! We have a new date set for the Big Talk From Small Libraries presentation, "Small Information Campaign Gets Big Numbers at the Polls". Melissa and Katrina have graciously agreed to re-do their presentation on March 13 from 3:30-4:30pm Central Time. The presentation will be recorded if you are unable to watch it at the rescheduled time.

This was the last session of the day that was unfortunately interrupted by the State of Nebraska network crashing.

You can register for this new date at http://nlc.nebraska.gov/scripts/calendar/eventshow.asp?ProgId=12060

Thanks,
Christa, Michael and Laura

Hi Dan,

I don't know of any way to prevent users from changing settings or adding/removing content. Instead, you may choose to restore factory settings, re-register, and re-load your content (optionally using Calibre<http://calibre-ebook.com/> software if the content is DRM-free) after each check-in.

If your concern is that users will purchase content with your Amazon account, note that I was able to register a Kindle Paperwhite device to Amazon and check out library ebooks without supplying any credit card information. If you do need to supply a card number, perhaps you could remove it later or replace it with one of several dummy numbers used for card transaction tests.

Hi Dan,

We also wipe our devices at checkin here, through the de-registration process, and include instructions for patrons to register the device using their own information. We do that for Kindles, Sony Readers, and Nooks.

Cheers!

It seems like Whispercast (whispercast.amazon.com) would do most, if not all of all, of what you want. I've used it in a test account, and it seems like it would work for libraries. Among the policies you can set are:

Block social network integration
Block web browser
Block store
Block factory reset & device de-registration Block changes to wi-fi settings

The process for distributing purchased ebooks to Kindles is laborious, but I think no more laborious than doing it manually. I would love to hear from a library that is actually using it live, to know whether it really meets the needs.

Science Boot Camp for Librarians (West) is coming to the University of Colorado Boulder - June 19-21, 2013.

Plan to attend the inaugural Science Boot Camp for Librarians (West) in beautiful Boulder, Colorado! Science Boot Camps for Librarians are immersive 2 ? day events featuring educational presentations delivered by scientists. Based on the successful annual event in Massachusetts, the Western version follows a similar format and will cover these 3 science topics: Bioinformatics, Environmental Sciences & GIS, and Physics. In addition, CU Boulder Librarians will give a Data Management Workshop, there will be interesting keynote speakers and we'll have a panel on women in science. And, of course, there will be time to network with fellow "campers."

Cost: For (dorm) lodging, meals and instructional content: $250.00. For commuters: $100 (What a deal!)

Registration: opens April 15th, 2013.

Audience: Science librarians, medical librarians, data management people, LIS students. You, we hope.

For further information on the program, travel to Boulder and soon, registration: http://tinyurl.com/BootCampWest

Thanks to both the Greater Western Library Alliance and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region for awards supporting this event! A complete list of sponsors is on the web site.
