MHCC Joins 'Oregon Reads' in Celebration of Poet William Stafford

(Gresham, Ore., April 1, 2014) -  Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) will join Oregon Reads 2014, a statewide community initiative that recognizes the 100th birthday of Oregon's most celebrated poet, William Stafford.

Oregon Reads is sponsored by the Oregon Library Association (OLA) and asks Oregonians to read books by and about Stafford in honor of the centennial. The goal is to involve 80,000 in the program, in communities and on campuses throughout the state.

MHCC and Associated Student Government (MHCC) have planned four free events, all open to students, employees and the community. Parking on all MHCC campuses is free, no permit required.

Author Kim Stafford, April 10, 6 - 8 p.m., Visual Arts Theatre
Stafford will answer audience questions and sign copies of his book, "Early Morning: Remembering My Father, William Stafford."

Poetry Open Mic, April 22, noon - 1 p.m., Student Union
The MHCC library and the Performing Arts department will host a poetry open mic event. Students, employees and community members are welcome to read from "Ask Me: 100 Essential Poems" or share their original work.

Author Tim Barnes - Head Start Family Event, May 1, 6 - 8 p.m., Rockwood Head Start, 35 N.E. 148th Ave., Portland
Barnes will read from Stafford's book, "Everyone Out Here Knows: A Big Foot Tale." Limited quantities of the book will be available. Families are invited to participate in art projects.

Author Brian Doyle, May 14, 6:30 - 8 p.m., Bob Scott Room (AC2326) on the Gresham Campus
Doyle will share the work and ideas of Stafford, discussing the complicated questions of war and peace in his writing, as well as his knack for the capturing the stunning beauty of small, everyday moments.

The three books will be available at the front desk of the Gresham Campus library. Those who take the books are asked to circulate them further by returning them to the desk when finished or giving them to another interested reader.

In addition to the three books, other Oregon Reads 2014 selections are:

*         Down in My Heart

*         Every War Has Two Losers: William Stafford on Peace and War

*         The Osage Orange Tree

About William Stafford
Stafford was born Jan. 17, 1914 and died Aug. 28, 1993 in Lake Oswego, Ore. In 2008, the Stafford family donated his papers to Lewis & Clark College.
