Author Josh Hanagarne, AKA “The World’s Strongest Librarian,” will speak at the Salem Convention Center on Thursday, April 17, at 7:00 pm as the President’s Banquet speaker for the Oregon Library Association’s annual conference. Sponsored by Emerick Construction, the event is open to the public. Tickets, which include dinner, are $35.95 and can be reserved on the Oregon Library Association's website.
Josh Hanagarne couldn’t be invisible if he tried. Diagnosed with severe Tourette Syndrome as a freshman in high school, the young 6’7” Mormon underwent everything from quack remedies to lethargy-inducing drug regimes to Botox injections that left him voiceless for three years. Undeterred, Josh persevered to marry, father a son and earn a degree in Library Science. Happily, his struggles with Tourette Syndrome were transformed after an eccentric, autistic strongman taught Hanagarne how to manage his tics through extreme strength training.
Today, Josh Hanagarne is a librarian at the main branch of Salt Lake City’s public library. His 2013 memoir The World's Strongest Librarian: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family illuminates the mysteries of this little-understood disorder, as well as the very different worlds of strongman training and modern libraries. With humor and candor, this unlikely hero traces his journey to overcome his disability— and navigate his Mormon faith—to find love and create a life worth living.
Hanagarne’s appearance is a feature of the Oregon Library Association’s annual conference, which attracts over 400 participants annually from libraries throughout Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon Library Association provides advocacy, education, leadership and collaboration to continually strengthen Oregon’s libraries and the communities they serve.
