[Libs-Or] Orbis Cascade Alliance communication with EBSCO and Ex Libris about data sharing

I disagree that being angry or critical of an entire group is inherently racist. I am critical of White Supremacists for example. I think Max shared an opinion and a perspective that is both valuable and personal for him. As a white woman that has worked in medical, public, and academic libraries for more than 20 years, the lack of both ethnic and gender diversity among library staff continues to trouble me.
Until different people decide to become librarians...
I have frequently tried to answer the question: Why would a person actively seek to be educated or employed in an industry that does not represent the cultural norms nor the diversity of the populations it serves? I believe that I am uniquely privileged to be on the right side of that issue and that disturbs me greatly.
What I find most troubling in this discussion, is the lack of focus on the real issues raised. I will close by pointing out that Max also used the words diversity, culture and business - which the group chose to ignore.
Respectfully,
Megan

Being late to the party, I would like to say something. I am a woman, divorced, adopted my grandchildren because my daughter is mentally ill. My children are Latino and Korean. My nieces are Latino and Mulatto. I have a daughter with a drinking problem. I would hope that all of that I deal with is not considered invalid because I am Caucasian. Until different people decide to become Librarians, there is nothing that can be done about it. Being angry or critical of an entire group is rather racists on it's own.

Max, I am sorry I called you a troll. Really, I am. It was a knee-jerk reaction to being lumped in with white supremacists! :( My feelings were very hurt by that. Yes, I'm white but I've actively worked against discrimination in my community and nationally.
I really do agree with you Max that the library world is not as diverse as it could be...just as there are not as many women in higher positions as there could be. I think this could have been a great topic for discussion, however unfortunately it didn't feel like any discussion was wanted.

Hello Max,
Yes, I did see the page you provided. My guess is that similar to many Oregon communities, the ethnic groups you mentioned are not represented by large numbers of the population in Israel. I was just asking for clarification as I did not see a correlation between your hash tags and the link you provided. I honestly thought I missed part of a conversation. As a librarian who lives and works on the Oregon Coast, my perspective is that homogeneous systems are alive and well in the library field. This is not something I am proud of but like the many of my colleagues I am proud to be in a field which generally protects the democratic rights of its communities and I would never fault my organization, or any other, for its cultural makeup without first doing a ton of research.
I believe when it comes down to it, at a fundamental level, many of us share your sentiments, Max. For instance, the major focal point of my work in public libraries is centered on information literacy instruction (just saw your recent post) and constantly learning new ways to sensitively address these needs for all members of my community. It is unfortunate if my request for clarification led to any "attacks" as I was only respectfully responding to a conversation.
Thanks for responding,
Paul

Did you not see the page?
I didn't see any Asian, Latinos, or Blacks in their leadership.
Please correct me if I am mistaken.
Homogeneous systems are defunct.
I'm saying that for a company who does business in the US, this organization's leadership seems AWFULLY homogeneous.
Incidentally, from my perspective, those hash tags can cover the entire library industry.
Thanks!

Hello Max,
Could you please be more specific with your claim? Seems like a serious accusation given the hash tags (?) you have included here.
Maybe, I missed part of the conversation?
Thanks for any clarification you might provide,
Paul

The leadership/management team at Ex Libris seems to not have diversity:

I don't like companies who are not ethnically diverse and I think
Oregon Tax Payer money should only go to business partners who are
ethnically diverse.

Northwest colleagues,
You may be aware that the Alliance has been encouraging EBSCO and Ex Libris to reach a data sharing agreement that allows EBSCO content to be fully represented in Primo. Although this particular conversation involves these two vendors, it is part of a broader principal. We continue to hold that libraries must be able to make independent decisions about content and discovery. All of the content our members purchase must be fully available via our chosen discovery system.
As you will recall, in April EBSCO announced a new metadata sharing policy. Since that time we have been analyzing this proposal and have engaged with both vendors. Now the Alliance Board has formally responded. In brief the Board's letter to EBSCO and Ex Libris says that we celebrate this step in the right direction but that it is not enough. The letter asks for a quick implementation timeline and a roadmap for more.
See the latest letter and entire dialog at https://www.orbiscascade.org/ebsco-ex-libris/ [1]
Best wishes.
