[Libs-Or] FW: New Data on Cities and Towns in Oregon from Census Bureau’s American Community Survey

As an aside, I recently relocated only to discover The American Community Survey request in my new mailbox.
Put it in the recycler.
One week later, a second request arrived with a threat of fines for failure to complete.  After a bit of searching, I discovered the ACS is, in fact, a real thing put out by the Census Bureau.
The penalties are seldom enforced but serve as a useful motivator.
Persons who do not respond virtually then receive a paper questionnaire via snailmail.
Should that questionnaire get recycled, there is a knock on the door.
If the resident is not home for the "knock," the phone begins to ring.  A lot.
The survey is highly intrusive: salaries, number of household toilets, methods of transportation, etc..
Certain elements of the population (i.e. self-proclaimed patriots, tea-baggers, etc.) interpret the survey as a constitutional violation.
It is my understanding the data is used for governmental appropriations, something our area could use dearly.
A quick internet search results in massive discussions about the Survey, pro and con.
It makes an interested read for persons interested in demographics.

|   New Data on Cities and Towns in Oregon from Census Bureau’s American Community Survey   The U.S. Census Bureau today released new data from the American Community Survey, providing statistics on more than 40 social, economic and housing topics for U.S. communities nationwide, including data about all cities and towns in Oregon.       Today’s release features data collected over five years between 2011 and 2015 and includes the following:     Data Profiles - 2011-15 American Community Survey   <Selected Social Characteristics> <Selected Economic Characteristics> <Selected Housing Characteristics> <ACS Demographic and Housing Estimates>   By pooling multiple years of data, the American Community Survey is able to produce a rolling sample of estimates for cities, towns, counties and other geographies, regardless of their population size.   For the first time, the 5-year dataset includes comparison profile tables that allow users to easily identify statistically significant changes between two sets of non-overlapping releases (in this case: 2006-10 and 2011-15). This is the second set of American Community Survey data released this year. The first, in September producedestimates based on data collected in 2015 for areas with populations of 65,000 or more.   If you have any questions about the data, please don’t hesitate to contact me ateric.a.coyle at census.gov. I’d be happy to walk through the data with you or help you with any other Census Bureau data needs. I can also deliver free trainings to you and your colleagues about how to access and use the data.   If you would like to arrange an interview with a data expert, please contact our Public Information Office (pio at census.gov; 301-763-3030).   To learn more about the American Community Survey — how it works and what it is used for, you can also visit us atwww.census.gov/acs.     Thanks,   Eric Coyle Data Dissemination Specialist Data Dissemination Branch Customer Liaison & Marketing Services Office U.S. Census Bureau   Cell 702.236.3202 eric.a.coyle at census.gov   census.gov Connect with us onSocial Media
