Could You Pass the Eighth Grade Final Examination?

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOJun2016/SchoolChildren.jpg]One hundred years ago, Oregon 8th graders had to pass two days of rigorous examinations before receiving their diplomas. Arithmetic, writing, language, agriculture, and spelling were covered on the first day. The second day included testing in physiology, history, geography, civil government, and reading. The State Library Oregon Documents Depository has paper copies of these tests from 1908 - 1936. Staff recently scanned copies from the years 1916-1936 and added them to the Oregon Documents Repository<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/GRES/pages/REPOS/index.aspx>, our collection of digital publications of Oregon state government. The 1917 Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction states that 5,609 Oregon students earned their eight grade diplomas in 1916. Click here to take the 1916 Eighth Grade Diploma Test<http://library.state.or.us/repository/2016/201604141039294/>. (Sorry, we don't have the answer sheet!) On Your Mark, Get Set... READ!

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOJun2016/Slogan.jpg]The 2016 statewide summer reading program has begun! Children and teens can lose up to three months of skills during the summer when they aren't in school. Libraries can help prevent learning loss by providing the summer reading program in their communities. Research indicates<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/summerreading/researchresources.aspx> that youth who read over the summer maintain or improve their reading skills.

The State Library has provided all public, volunteer, and tribal libraries with membership in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/summerreading/researchresources.aspx> and summer reading manuals to plan their programs. Library staff can download and print Oregon summer reading certificates<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/summerreading/summerreadingcertificates.aspx> to present youth who finish their local summer reading program. The Oregon College Savings Plan<https://www.oregoncollegesavings.com/buzz/summer-reading.shtml> sponsored a media package with KATU to encourage Oregonians to participate in the summer reading program at their local library and enter the summer reading sweepstakes<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/summerreading/sweepstakes.aspx> to win a $529 college savings plan. Please contact Katie Anderson<mailto:katie.anderson at state.or.us> if you have any questions.

Answerland Advisory Committee Established

[https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOJun2016/Answerland.jpg]At the recent LSTA Advisory Council meeting, the formation of the new Answerland Advisory Committee was approved. This is a committee of the LSTA Advisory Council<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/lstacouncil.aspx> (LAC), which advises the State Library Board<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/Pages/2bdinfo.aspx>. It is made up of 6 - 10 voting members, drawn from all areas of the state and representing the public, school, academic, and special libraries that use or provide service for Answerland.

The primary responsibility of the Answerland Advisory Committee is to advise the LAC and State Library regarding the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of Answerland. The ultimate vision is to create, maintain, and continually improve a high-quality online reference program that succeeds in serving the needs of all residents of Oregon.

Committee membership and other information can be viewed on the advisory council's webpage<http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/pages/answerland/advisory.aspx>.

2016 Public Library Statistics Open in July

The 2016 Public Library Statistics will be opening for input at the beginning of July. There is a new data element that is being requested at the national level: successful retrieval of electronic information. This data element covers the number of full-content or descriptive records that are being examined, downloaded, or supplied to the patron. In other words, we want to capture the use of online content provided by libraries, specifically commercial databases. More information to come about the 2016 Statistics. If you have any questions, please contact Ann Reed<mailto:ann.reed at state.or.us>, 503-378-5027.

Kudos on their success and thanks again for giving LAL a new home. Thanks to the Oregon Reading Association and three divisions of the Oregon Library Association - Children's Services Division, Oregon Young Adult Network, and Oregon Association of School Libraries; all are local cosponsors and helped fund prizes. Also, thanks to the nine Oregon judges - a school librarian, public librarian, and author for each of the three levels - who devoted their time to reading entries.

For those interested in promoting Letters About Literature next school year, check the Willamette Writers website<http://willamettewriters.org/letters-about-literature/> in late September for entry forms and guidelines. Entries are usually due in December.
