[Libs-Or] Microfilming our local paper from 2015 and on

Hi all,

Yes, at UO we stopped microfilming and have developed the Current Newspapers born-digital workflow: https://odnp.uoregon.edu/current-newspapers/. This process is free to publishers, feasible with embargos, and a great way- as we know- to have an archive of the papers on a free, keyword searchable website (http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/). I have been in touch with former publishers about re-joining ODNP with the new digital workflow, but some publishers cannot with copyright and embargo restrictions on their titles.

If you have any questions about this process or if you'd like to reach out your local paper about joining, please contact me and I can provide some more information.

Thank you,

Sarah

Our main paper, the Gazette-Times, is still coming to us on microfilm, but the Philomath Express, a small weekly from the same media company, is not being preserved and we've been stockpiling paper copies for about a year.

I contacted Sarah Seymore<mailto:sseymore at uoregon.edu> at the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program<http://library.uoregon.edu/diglib/odnp/> to determine if they could be preserved digitally. Sarah and I have been diligently trying to get in touch with the publisher for permission (presumably with an agreeable embargo date), but he has not been responsive.

Maybe you would have better luck with the management at your local paper.

Best,

Are you guys also a Pamplin newspaper, perchance? We're in the same boat.

Cheers!

Since we haven't gotten permission from our newspaper publisher to retain their paper digitally, and their digital version isn't the entire paper, just select articles, I'm looking at continuing the microfilming of our local paper since the UO stopped in 2014.

What are the rest of you doing to preserve that local history for your community? We are actually binding our paper copies and debating whether we should find a company to microfilm our current copies as well. We are in a very fortunate position that we have almost our full run of newspapers on microfilm from 1888 on and I hate to lose that local historical connection for those doing research 20-50 years from now.

If you have a company you are working with, I would be interested to learn about them.
