Heather J. Martin, MISt, AHIP, serves as the director of system library
services for Providence St. Joseph Health. Please download and read
Heather’s article, Hospital Librarians: Training the Next Generation of
Doctors, here: https://commons.pacificu.edu/olaq/vol24/iss1/10/

>From Heather’s article, “Hospital librarians address a wide array of
information needs. They help nurses figure out how to take care of
patients, help physicians with difficult cases, help families get reliable
health information, and sometimes the information they provide even helps
save a life. They also play an important role in training the next
generation of doctors. At one hospital in Oregon, Providence St. Joseph
Health System Library Services has integrated traditional library
instruction directly into the curriculum of the Internal Medicine Residency
Program.”

Heather J. Martin describes an effort by Providence St. Joseph Health to
utilize librarians to support and train doctors with their research needs,
to improve the health outcomes of their patients. Perhaps this program can
be duplicated at hospitals worldwide. Perhaps this article will inspire you
to join this noble mission to serve humanity in a new way. Perhaps we
should read and share this article widely as if someone’s life depends upon
it.

Thank you,
