cultural humility and implicit bias in information literacy sessions

Hi folks,

The phrase “cultural humility” is new to me and I’ve registered for the
session to learn about it. If other NMRT members can make time to view the
webinar, perhaps we can have a complement to this month’s discussion topic
and exchange some thoughts about what we learned from Ms. Hodge.

I also encourage everyone who hasn’t already tried out the Implicit
Association Test to do so. One of UF’s psychology faculty, Kate Ratliff, is
executive director of the project and I’ve seen her give a couple of talks
about implicit bias. For those of us who’d considered ourselves
‘enlightened’ or ‘past prejudice,’ the tests will almost certainly provide
opportunities for accepting humility—and from what I’ve heard from
Professor Ratliff, that’s true for pretty much every identity category you
might accept for yourself.

Regards,

G.W.

Join ODLOS (Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services) and ACRL
(Association of College and Research Libraries) for the free webcast,
“*Addressing
cultural humility and implicit bias in information literacy sessions*.” The
webcast will be held *Wednesday, January 17, 2018,* from 1:00 -2:00 p.m.
Central time (11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pacific | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Mountain
| 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Central | 2:00 -3:00 p.m. Eastern).

Learning cultural humility and bias-reducing strategies for those who work
with diverse populations is critical for students and librarians. In order
to provide the best service possible and to stay true to professions core
values and mission, a critical lens must be turned to the individual in
order to work on ameliorating the effect of one’s biases. We will describe
strategies and resources we used to overcome these challenges, such as
encouraging self-reflection, providing discussion about topics such as
race, social class and privilege within a holding environment (an
atmosphere that encourages openness and ease despite difficult topics).
Discover how to define implicit bias and cultural humility, understand why
teaching and learning about cultural humility and implicit bias is useful,
and incorporate strategies learned in this session into your own classes.

To learn more about your own potential implicit biases before the webcast,
we encourage you to visit Harvard's Project Implicit page to take an
Implicit Association Test: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/.
