Wow is right!  Jeremy, I hope you will do a program at a future OLA conference on this project—I’d love to hear how it turns out!  Kudos to everyone at the Curry County Library!

Congratulations to Jeremy Skinner and staff at Curry Public Library (CPL). They are one of the 2018-2023 recipients of the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant from ODE. The grant supports “the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.” CPL will receive about $250,000 per year for 3 years and then 75% of that in years 4 and 5.

Library staff will run an after school program for middle schoolers 3 days a week in the new CPL learning center and 2 days a week at the local middle school. During the 3 days at the library, the students will be divided into groups of 3. Each group will rotate between structured tech lab time, tutor/mentor/study time, and an enrichment time. The enrichment time will be different depending on the day of the week, but will include a range of activities led by community partners including health/wellness, art, science/nature, personal finance, etc. The grant allows the library to provide snacks, transportation, and dedicated paid staff to run the program.

They might be the first public library to be a direct recipient of 21st Century Community Learning Center grant funds.

Here’s to a successful program!

Jen
