The State Library of Oregon will be closed on Friday, March 16, 2018 for a staff in-service day. The theme for the 2018 In-Service Day is Building Community. In addition to training we are welcoming Buzzy Nielsen, OLA President and storyteller Rebecca Cohen as our guest speakers. The State Library will be resuming its normal schedule on Monday, March 19th.

State Library of Oregon Announces LSTA Grant Project of the Year

Following a recommendation by the State Library of Oregon's LSTA Advisory Council, the State Library Board recently voted unanimously to award Reuniting Finley and Bohlman the very first LSTA Project of the Year for fiscal year 2016. Oregon Historical Society Research Library Director Shawna Gandy, and Oregon State University Special Collections & Archives Research Center Director Larry Landis, were presented this award by State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen at an exhibit opening last Thursday at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland.

Through a 2016 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) competitive grant, the Oregon Historical Society worked with Oregon State University Libraries to digitize, preserve, and present unique materials and photographs from Oregon conservationists and photographers William L. Finley, Irene Barnhart Finley, and Herman T. Bohlman. This collaboration demonstrated how separate institutions can align processes to present unified digital access to resources. Using materials found in the newly digitized collections, the project also produced a number of engaging public programs about the lasting work of Bohlman and the Finleys, presented to a variety of audiences throughout Oregon.

Reuniting Finley and Bohlman was chosen as an exemplary project because it struck an exceptional balance between building a new digital collection and creating new programming and outreach efforts with partner agencies and organizations - which in turn helped engage new audiences for all of those involved. This project also widened a window of public understanding of Oregon's history of natural conservation, heightening civic engagement and fostering a new opportunity for lifelong learning for many Oregonians.

State Library of Oregon Artwork: Original and New

The State Library building contains a number of interesting and informative pieces of art. Installation of these pieces occurred in two distinct phases. The first phase took place upon building construction in 1939 and the second upon renovation and building rededication in 2000.

Portland artist Gabriel Lavare<https://cyclotram.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-lavare-lions.html> was commissioned to produce artwork for the building. His work can be seen on the exterior of the buildings: a seal incorporating the "mission press", the first printing press in the Oregon country, and three other bas-reliefs above each door. Inside the lobby is the bas-relief of the pioneer mother reading to her son. In the reference room, are three carved panels highlighting state symbols: the state bird, state flower and again, the mission press. High on the south wall of the reference room are marks from five early European printers.

By 2000, the "one percent for art<http://www.oregonartscommission.org/services/percent-art>" legislation was in place and correspondingly, the library was accented with a number of new pieces. In particular, the work of Oregon artist Dennis Cunningham<http://www.denniscunningham.net/> is featured. Keeping with the theme of state symbols, the library proudly exhibits 17 medallions<https://oregondigital.org/catalog/?_=1501871909431&f%5Bdesc_metadata__location_label_sim%5D%5B%5D=Oregon+State+Library+%3E%3E+Marion+County+%3E%3E+Oregon+%3E%3E+United+States%24http%3A%2F%2Fsws.geonames.org%2F8486125%2F&f%5Bdesc_metadata__set_label_sim%5D%5B%5D=Oregon+Percent+for+Art%24http%3A%2F%2Foregondigital.org%2Fresource%2Foregondigital%3Apercent-for-art&per_page=50> that depict state icons and additional state symbols.

Did you know the state insect is the Oregon Swallowtail<https://oregondigital.org/catalog/oregondigital:df67zh70h>?

The next time you are in Salem we'd like to invite you to take a look at our wonderful artwork in our WPA-era building. We always love showing it off.
