[Libs-Or] REALM Project update: Round 1 test results now

The write-up (https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/test1-results.html) for the first test goes into some detail about the conditions under which the samples were tested, although since I'm not a scientist some of it's a bit opaque. The results do say that the attenuation occurred in "standard office temperature and relative humidity conditions typically achievable by any air-conditioned office space." It would be interesting to know if there are future studies planned on different conditions.

I have to wonder about the environment the samples were kept in. Was it warm and humid like an outside book drop? Was there any fluid (e.g. snot) included with the virus, or was it applied in a dry state? I've seen studies that showed other viruses (like the flu) living in snot on money for 9 days longer than if they were dry.

Hi Library Community,

Thanks to the many people that reached out to me on this. I wasn?t the only one confused on this. In case you were too, here?s essentially what others said.

The lab?s first test was designed to determine how much virus was on samples at day 0 (after samples dried), day 6, day 9, and day 12. Because no statistically significant amount of virus was detectable on day 6 (Fig. 2), they ran another test (with a higher concentration of virus on their samples) and evaluated samples in a shorter period at day 0, day 1 (24 hours later), day 3, and day 4 (Fig. 3). The second test determined that some materials showed no amount of recoverable virus after 1 day, and the rest of the materials showed none after 3 days.

Smarter people than me helped me on this. One was even a sciencey librarian (undergrad in botany and chemistry)! So this is pretty legit. ? Bottom line is that allthe virus was dead after 3 days on all materials on the second test.

p.s. If you haven?t read the latest REALM literature review I would recommend having a look. It?s more general info about COVID prevention. But could be helpful in making some plans for cleaning in building, mask wearing, etc. https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/realm-systematic-lit-review.html__;!!C5qS4YX3!SrSScd4pGRwIt0lUgOGsig16fdps0Fzb3ZKo41Zs8L5Lj_1feWzkQsS_S1zKMdba$

After reading the report carefully I am more confused than prior to reading it. Could someone please help me understand what the difference is between Figure 2 and Figure 3 are in the report? Was it just that the first test only checked at days 0, 6, 9, and 12? Then they did another experiment checking at days 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4? Please confirm or let me know what it actually means because I?m a librarian, not a scientist!

Thank you,

Many in the library community have been waiting for the first results of this research. There is a detailed report of the testing<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/test1-results.html__;!!C5qS4YX3!SrSScd4pGRwIt0lUgOGsig16fdps0Fzb3ZKo41Zs8L5Lj_1feWzkQsS_SwtwO4Vz$ >, but here is the summary:
As part of the REALM Project?s Phase 1 research, Battelle has conducted a natural attenuation study to provide information on how long some commonly circulated library materials would need to be quarantined prior to being returned to public circulation. Testing was conducted by applying the virulent SARS-CoV-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19) on five materials held at standard room temperature and humidity conditions. The materials tested included the following items, which were provided by Columbus Metropolitan Library:
(1) Hardback book cover (buckram cloth)
(2) Softback book cover
(3) Plain paper pages inside a closed book
(4) Plastic book covering (biaxially oriented polyester film)
(5) DVD case.

Results show that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable on the materials after three days of quarantine.

Round 1 test results now available

The REALM Project has released the results of the first round of Battelle?s laboratory testing for COVID-19 on commonly circulated library materials. The five materials tested in this round included a hardback book cover (buckram cloth), paperback book cover, plain paper pages inside a book, plastic protective book covering, and a DVD case.
