[Libs-Or] Checking out laptops and hotspots

We have been lending out laptops for years. My IT guy has created a zip file with all our policies and forms. I'm happy to send it individually.

To be honest, we don’t have anything installed to ensure that patrons are following policy when they check out our hotspots. We just tell them that they are required to abide by our Electronic Access Policy. We don’t tell them that we really have no way of knowing if they do… If we received notification that they had engaged in illegal downloading, though, we would contact the patron and inform them of this, and let them know that repeat instances could result in loss of hotspot privileges. This hasn’t happened yet with the hotspots, but since we’ve received similar notices about our library wireless in the past, I’m assuming it’s something that could happen.

I’d be reluctant to install additional software on laptops, etc. for the purposes of monitoring, especially if similar software isn’t installed on in-library PCs. It seems like a pretty big potential privacy violation. If we ever manage to get our laptop lending program off the ground, we will likely install Clean Slate or a similar product that will allow us to re-image the laptops when they’re returned.

Hi all,

Our library is working on a program where we will be checking out laptops and hotspots to be used at home by our users. I was talking with our IT Manager about this and we need to figure out a way to provide some monitoring so that users follow our library technology use policy when using these devices from home. IT is the most concerned about being able to prevent users from doing anything illegal with our devices and possibly being able to track them down if they are lost or stolen. Our IT manager suggested using a software called NetMotion to do this, but is is a fairly expensive software.

I would love some advice from other libraries that check out technology or hotspots on how you monitor them and ensure you get them back. Also, bonus points if anyone would be willing to share with me your policies or user agreements regarding tech to check out.

Thank you!
