EXCEL – Using the AutoFill Shortcut
Novice

If you have ever wanted to create a series of data in your spreadsheets, like the months of the year or a list of numbers, did you know that Excel can fill it in for you? All you need to do is start typing the first few entries and this software is smart enough to detect a pattern and fill in the rest for you!

Once you type in the initial items, you can use the AutoFill function to complete the list. For example, you do this in situations like these:

· Numbers in sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4
· Numbers in a pattern: 10, 20, 30, 40
· Alphabet: a, b, c, d
· Days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
· Months of the year: January, February, March
· Date sequence, 4/4/22, 4/5/22, 4/6/22
· And so on…. Most anything that Excel can detect as a pattern will work with AutoFill.

Using AutoFill in Excel

Here's how it works:

· Select the cell where you want the series to begin and type in the entry you want to start with – for example, the number 1.

· Go to the next cell you want to be filled and type in the number 2 to begin creating the series.

[drag down column]

· Highlight the two cells you just completed. Put the mouse in the lower right-hand corner (on the small black box) until it turns into a simple cross (looks like a plus (+) sign.

· Drag the mouse down the column to the cell where you want the last value of the series to appear.

· Release the mouse and the rest of the series will be filled in automatically!

NOTES: Sometimes, if it's a recognizable series, you can get away with just typing in one item, e.g. January and then drag with cross down.

TIP: The range can be filled downwards, upwards, rightwards or leftwards.
[autofill]

NOTE: By the way, you can also use autofill if you want to put the SAME number or text all the way down – instead of a series. Just type that repeated number in at least two cells; then drag the corner. Example: all 1’s or all January’s.

Using Autofill in Google Sheets

[autofill in Google Sheets]

Yes, the auto-complete feature works exactly the same way in Google Sheets.

· Select the cell where you want the series to begin and type in the entry you want to start with.
· Go to the next cell you want to be filled and type the next character in creating the series.
· Highlight the two cells you just completed. Put the mouse in the lower right-hand corner (on the small square box) until it turns into a cross.
· Drag the mouse down the column to the cell where you want the last value of the series to appear.

Communication: Listening
Three ways to listen better

There are a number of things you can do to show you are listening well and to also increase your understanding of what is being said.

Here are three habits that could serve you well.

1. Look at the person who is speaking.
2. Question the speaker to clarify what is being said.
3. Repeat some of the things the person stated.

By the way, the reason we chose to list three this time and another three next week is because studies show that three items are the most people tend to remember. When you add a fourth, typically, memory fog sets in.

Leadership
5 Steps to Prevent Organizational Indifference

If you want your organization to flourish, you need to keep your employees motivated so indifference doesn't set in. You must maintain that initial enthusiasm they had when they were first promoted or hired.

Although leadership plays a big role in the organization's operation, a team is only as strong as its employees. When your workforce becomes organizationally indifferent, productivity will suffer.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ward off apathy among your employees. By simply following these five steps, you will be on your way to keeping your folks energized. You'll start seeing your organization rise to a new level of excellence.

Keep in mind that each of these steps is interconnected. So if you neglect any one of them, indifference will creep in.

1. Set goals and have a clear vision.
2. Keep employees informed.
3. Equip your workers.
4. Create a motivational environment and provide incentives.
5. Empower your employees.

NOTE: Watch for the next issues to explain each one more fully.
