INTERNET - Restore Accidently Closed Browser Tabs (and Set Up Warning)

The other day I was doing research for an upcoming Tech-Talk article. It's an advanced topic so I had eight tabs of info open in my Chrome browser. I wanted to close ONE tab, but accidentally shut the browser down entirely and lost all of the articles that I was reading. Oh no! How do I get them back?

Well, no matter if you use Chrome, Firefox or Edge, there is a way to recover your recently closed pages/tabs.

And… to take it a step further, you can even set your browser to "warn" you each time you try to close out your browser with multiple tabs open (yes, that's an extra click, but some people want the notification). Let's take a look.

Chrome - Restore Closed Tabs

There are a few ways in Chrome to re-open recently closed tabs.

If you like (and can remember) shortcuts, there's one that will restore closed Chrome browser windows. Open a window and just click Ctrl + Shift + T (TIP: remember, "T" for "Tabs") and it will display the last set of tabs that you had open.

Or, if you don't always remember shortcuts, but know that you can do anything (almost) from Settings…. open a new Chrome window, then:

1.  Click on Settings (the 3 vertical dots) in the upper right corner.
2.  Click on History.
3.  Then a window will open that shows "Recently closed" and the number of tabs underneath it.
4.  Just click on "X tabs" (in the image example below it shows 6 tabs) and then in the next window, select Restore Window.

All of your closed tabs will reopen.

Chrome - Set a Warning Before Closing

Currently, there is no Setting in Chrome to warn you before closing all of your browser windows. The above steps (and shortcut) are a quick way to recover pages if you need them.

With this little tool activated, you'll get a pop-up window if you try to close all browsers at once.

Firefox - Restore Closed Tabs

As with Chrome, restoring recently closed tabs in Firefox is a function in Settings.

1.  Click the Menu button (three horizontal bars) in the upper right.
2.  Choose History.
3.  Then select Recently Closed Tabs or Restore Previous Session.

Firefox - Set a Warning Before Closing

If you always want a pop-up window warning you that you are closing ALL tabs that are open (not just individual ones), you can enable the "close tab warning" option.

·     Click the Menu button (three horizontal bars) in the upper right.
·     Select Settings.
·     In the General tab from the left menu, in the Tabs section on that page, check the box next to "Confirm before closing multiple tabs."

Edge – Restore Closed Tabs

You can also use a shortcut in Edge to open multiple recently closed tabs (the same as in Chrome). Open a new Edge window, put your cursor in the URL bar and press Ctrl + Shift + T on your keyboard.

Or, to do this from Settings:

1.  Click the Menu button (three horizontal dots) in the upper right corner.
2.  Select History.
3.  Go to the Recently closed tab to select the tabs you want to reopen.

Edge - Set a Warning Before Closing

As with Firefox, this is a simple Settings change.

·     Click the Menu button (three horizontal dots) in the upper right corner.
·     Select Settings.
·     In the left menu select Appearance and then scroll down to find the under Customize browser section and toggle ON the "Ask before closing multiple tabs" option.

Switch out "I" with "You"

Whenever you have an idea you want to share it is natural to start out the conversation with the word "I". But there's a better way! Especially if you want the listener to endorse your suggestion or request.

The trick is to look for ways to use the word "you" instead of "I". Take the emphasis off who has the idea, and focus on the idea itself ... and position it with the other person.

Examples:

·     "I want to show you what's new." vs "Would you like to see what’s new, I'd love to show you!"

·     "I thought of a better way to..." vs "You might be interested in hearing an idea about..."

·     "I discovered an efficient way to..." vs "If you're interested in an efficient way to..."

Here's a great phrase to keep in your communication toolkit: "Tell me about that."

When might you use it?

You could be talking to someone when they make a comment that either confuses or intrigues you. Before anything else, say "Tell me about that."

Or perhaps they make a remark that sounds an alarm so you want to be careful how you respond. First say, "Tell me about that."

There may be times when you just don't understand what is being said. Before moving on, say, "Tell me about that."

Basically with this approach, you get more insight into their comment before you say anything.

You'll also show that you're a good listener and interested in what they have to say by using this phrase ... you'll be buying some time and getting a clearer picture.

Here are variations you can use: "Tell me more." or "Tell me more about that."

With "tell me..." you'll get valuable information before you need to make a comment, give your opinion or ask a probing question.
