Stephanie,

Pretty much everything I have seen related to this issue has been posted here to the Oregon Intellectual Freedom news lists and/or the Celebrate Freedom Facebook page for the OLA Intellectual Freedom committee. So I have not seen anything about reviewing the process. What discussions are happening in ALA Council or elsewhere I don’t know. Danielle Jones is OLA’s ALA representative. I’ve copied her into this discussion to see if she has any insight on your question.

Does anyone know if there will also be process improvements incorporated in revising the resolution?

My understanding from reading April Hathcock's post about the resolution (https://aprilhathcock.wordpress.com/2018/07/11/my-bought-sense-or-ala-has-done-it-again/) was that the final version contained language that had not been vetted with the ALA Council or incorporated through the whole process taken to draft the resolution before it was brought to Council for a vote.

An update:

Yesterday the ALA Executive Board voted to authorize an electronic vote by Council on the Resolution to Rescind Meeting Rooms: an interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights (17-2019 ALA CD#19.6_62617_act).

Thank you to all those that gave feedback on the resolution<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MgPDhl9necX7JIYy39rzLa22fsxMmmy3tDif5s8_V2U/edit>. As your chapter councilor, I gladly signed the resolution as the wording/inclusion of "hate groups" was not in the draft of the proposed interpretations.

I continue to be welcome to hearing your thoughts on this.

All the best,
Danielle Jones

For readers who are new to this discussion and debate about a recent update to the American Library Association's "Meeting Rooms: An interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights," below are some links from ALA's intellectual freedom e-newsletter<https://ala.informz.net/informzdataservice/onl> to get you up to speed.

In short, the ALA document which provides guidance on intellectual freedom and meeting room use was recently updated. One of the changes that has since received much negative feedback was the specific inclusion of "hate groups" as an example of a type of group that may not be excluded from meeting room use based on their viewpoint or content of speech: "If a library allows charities, non-profits, and sports organizations to discuss their activities in library meeting rooms, then the library cannot exclude religious, social, civic, partisan political, or hate groups from discussing their activities in the same facilities."

Please excuse any cross posting. We are trying to get this draft resolution out to as many ALA Members as possible

This is a draft resolution to rescind the recent meeting rooms interpretation voted on by the ALA Council and brought by the Intellectual Freddom Committee (IFC). Even though IFC is interested in revising this statement they cannot rescind something that was voted on by Council. So, we created this resolution.

I am not sure if the attachments will make it to this list. So, you can also find it here in Google Drive [ https://goo.gl/Mp8vEM]

Your feedback is appreciated. Please share this widely.
