[OLA-IF-News] Draft Resolution To Rescind Meeting Rooms: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights

On the whole the process probably wasn’t bad. The proposed interpretations
were very public and open for comments well in advance of the ALA
Conference.

The breakdown came between the discussions and when the final version was
presented to ALA Council without ALA Council being given a heads up about
the wording changes on their discussion list or during the presentation of
the interpretation when it was brought to the Council meeting for a vote.
The misstep came when Council Members didn’t reread the resolution
presented to them that day.

This misstep has caused a lot more work for the Intellectual Freedom
Committee and reminded ALA Council members that they need to really look at
documents before voting, even when they think they’ve already seen and read
a resolution brought to Council. I think maybe both the committee and ALA
Council have learned a bit about being careful with their actions.

I’m not sure any process change would overcome these personal errors in
judgment. They are errors any of us could make no matter what process is in
place. Hopefully we learn from these errors.
