Hi,

I thought some of you might be interested in this. Staff at the Oregon Department of Education issued guidance about how to handle challenged materials. It was sent via a private listserv to administrators in Oregon's public schools and districts. See the document link in the email below.

Thanks,
Jen

Subject: [oasl-all] ODE Guidance for School & District Admins about Challenged Materials

Hi,

Way back when the OBOB and George kerfuffle started, it became clear that some school and district administrators could use some guidance about intellectual freedom, challenged materials, and related concepts. I reached out to some staff at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) to ask if they would be willing to provide that guidance. The answer was yes, but for a variety of reasons, it took until now to finalize a document.

"Guidance to School Districts: Addressing Challenged Materials in K-12 Education<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1htvGFuKxy0E4wZUSOQ8dHhFlXBhfT7Er/view?usp=sharing>" was sent to school and district administrators on Tuesday, May 7th. It was part of an email that also discussed 2019 commencement ceremonies, so I hope that recipients did not overlook the part about challenged materials.

A few school librarians and I were able to offer input on the document. In the end, leadership at ODE had the final say. One change they asked for was to include links to several Oregon School Board Association (OSBA) policy templates. It is my personal opinion that some of the OSBA templates are vague. For example, one OSBA policy that I read does not make it clear how to address challenges to library materials. However, the policy examples are starting points, and you can point folks to more specific policies like the one that Beaverton School District updated recently<https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/dist/Admin%20Regs%20and%20Policies/I%20Policies/Regulations/IIIIA%20AR.pdf>.

Now when challenges come up regarding library and instructional materials, you have one more resource to point administrators to - the document from ODE, which includes recommended practices for school districts, administrators, teachers, and school librarians. I am thankful to the staff at ODE who worked on this project.

Thanks,
Jen
