Turning over the Keys Ceremony for Baker County's New Boat

[cid:image011.jpg at 01CDEE7F.2AC281E0] Representatives from the Oregon State Marine Board will be on hand with Baker County Sheriff's Marine Patrol Deputies at the Portland Expo Center on January 13 to dedicate the new patrol boat to the county. The keys will be turned over to the Baker County Sheriff, Mitchell Southwick and Deputy Adam Robb, the Marine Patrol Program Manager, at 5 pm.
This new, 22-foot aluminum River Wild boat (and trailer) from Liquid Technologies in Grants Pass, comes equipped with a 6.0 L fuel injected engine that produces low carbon emissions and is more fuel efficient than boats built prior to 2006. The jet propulsion is capable of being operated in a variety of conditions including water depth as little as six inches, on a full plane, with a carrying capacity of 1200 pounds and max speed of 45 MPH. This boat is ideal for varying weather conditions in nearby Hell's Canyon Complex and will allow marine deputies to respond to emergency situations quickly.
The Sheriff's Office currently has five trained deputies for marine patrol operations.
Baker County Sheriff's Office previously operated a 1995 Jetcraft boat. The new patrol boat was built in Grants Pass, Oregon, and was purchased by the Marine Board for $44,850 after a $14,000 trade in from River Wild.
"This boat can go in any kind of water," says Mervin Hee, Waterways Coordinator for the Marine Board. "Because it's built with the most modern technology, this boat will be much more cost-effective to operate with very little maintenance and huge gasoline savings. This boat will serve the boaters of Baker County for decades."
The Marine Board is funded by registration fees and marine fuel taxes paid by boaters. No general fund tax dollars are used to support the agency or its programs. Boater-paid fees go back to boaters in the form of law enforcement services (on-the-water enforcement, training and equipment), education/outreach materials and boating access facilities.
