For Immediate Release Date: October 7, 2013

Tenmile Lakes Boat Wash Station Dedication October 22
The First of its kind for Boaters in Oregon to Prevent the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species

The Oregon State Marine Board will be dedicating the newly constructed boat wash station at Tenmile Lakes on October 22 at 10 am. Representative Caddy McKeown (District 9 of Coos Bay), and representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, Coos County Parks Department and Marine Board members will be in attendance.
The primary goal for this first-of-its-kind project in Oregon is to provide boaters a way to clean off aquatic vegetation either before or after launching their boats in Tenmile Lakes.
The station features two bays with cold water that moves through hoses that are mounted on spring loaded auto-retract reels with low pressure nozzles. Wash water is collected in a 1,000 gallon underground tank with [cid:image007.jpg at 01CEC36F.C27189D0] screens that trap any vegetation and other debris before the water is pumped into a sand-filled settling pond located away from the lake for filtration. A filter sock is installed over the discharge pipe and provides an additional filtration mechanism.

[After picture of new boat wash station with two bays][cid:image019.jpg at 01CEC36F.C27189D0]This project is a partnership spearheaded by the Tenmile Lakes Basin Partnership, a non-profit Watershed Council, who approached the Marine Board about building a boat wash station at the Coos County Parks Department boat launch facility on Tenmile Lakes. The Coos County Parks Department, understanding how essential it is to keep invasive species out of our waterways, also opted into the concept, which started gaining momentum by 2011. The U.S. Forest Service was then able to secure an internal agency grant to fund almost half of the total project costs. In 2012, the Marine Board budgeted funds through the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program to support the remaining costs in addition to design and engineering expertise provided by Marine Board boating facilities engineers. The final cost for the boat wash station totaled $104,000.
To measure public awareness, researchers at Portland State University Center for Lakes and Reservoirs will conduct both pre and post-station surveys of boaters. The data is currently being compiled and preliminary results show strong support of the new boat wash station. If the use data and monitoring supports building more wash stations, the Marine Board will continue to look for partners in other areas of the state using the same boat wash station finance model and design.
[cid:image021.jpg at 01CEC36F.C27189D0] The Marine Board, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, administers Oregon's Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program. Revenue generated from permit sales for paddlecraft and motorized boats go into a dedicated fund for aquatic invasive species prevention, detection, decontamination, and outreach materials. The Marine Board has approximately $1.6 million in revenue for the 2013-2015 biennium to prevent invasive species from entering the state through mandatory inspection stations and to help reduce the spread within Oregon of already-established aquatic invasive species through education, enforcement and new programs such as this one.
