Bad Machinery (any of them - but, maybe best to start with #1) - John Allison

Gotham Academy, vol. 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy. By Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher (if they want superhero-ish, but don't have the 20 years of schooling required to understand anything that's going on in Batman's world - ha!)

Princess Ugg, vol. 1. - Ted Naifeh

Hi Aimee,

I'd recommend the following:

The Lumberjanes series, which is fairly new and wildly popular;
The Princeless series, which is also fairly new and wildly popular;
All of Gene Luen Yang's amazing graphic novels, such as American-born Chinese, The Shadow Hero, Animal Crackers, Boxers/Saints, and The Secret Coders;
The Bone series by Jeff Smith, which has been around for a while and still circulates really well;
Meanwhile by Jason Shiga, for time well-wasted; and
The Hereville books by Barry Deutsch.
