There is a conversation on the Association for Rural and Small Libraries listserv about teen programs to learn life skills like how to write a check, do laundry, cook a meal, etc. Beth Yoke from ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association participated in the conversation with some good ideas and resources that I thought you might be interested in.-Katie

Surveying the teens to see what is of most interest to them is an excellent approach! If there's room on your survey, you might also ask the teens if they have mastered any particular life skills that they would like to teach to their peers by leading or co-leading a program. Another thing to consider to maximize appeal for teens is terminology. Lots of other libraries are offering these kinds of programs under the name "life hacks." If you Google "teen library program life hacks" you can see what some other libraries are doing.

Lastly, you will want to think about what outcomes you're trying to achieve for the teens, and this might vary by program. Building these into your planning will help you measure the impact of your effort. Here are some outcomes resources:

  * Remake Learning's Cross-Cutting Competencies and Career Readiness Competencies will have some relevance: http://remakelearning.org/competencies/
  * CASEL's social & emotional learning competencies will have some use: http://www.casel.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Competencies.pdf
  * Generic Learning Outcomes: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/measuring-outcomes/generic-learning-outcomes#section-8 (start w/ the GLO Checklist)
  * If you want to geek out on the outcomes topic, check out YALSA's wiki page: http://wikis.ala.org/yalsa/index.php/After_School_Programs#Determining_.26_Measuring_Outcomes

Best of luck with your programs and thanks for all you do for teens!
