Please pardon the cross-posing.

Hi Folks,

Here's a bit of information about a few topics that are somewhat related.

Civic Online Reasoning: Sorting Fact from Fiction (Apps due 5/3)
Just a friendly reminder that the end of Wednesday, 5/3, is the deadline to apply for pre-paid registration to participate in Stanford University's online institute, Civic Online Reasoning: Sorting Fact from Fiction on the Internet. This opportunity is open to licensed school librarians and college/university instructional librarians. Details are in the original message below my signature block.

ILAGO Speaker: Sam Wineburg
By chance, the speaker for this year's Information Literacy Summit from the Information Literacy Advisory Group of Oregon<https://ilago.wordpress.com/> (ILAGO) will be Sam Wineburg from Stanford University's Civic Online Reasoning<https://cor.stanford.edu/> project. The conference will be the last week of May, and the featured speaker's slot is Tuesday, 5/23, at 1:00 pm Pacific. Registration will open soon.

Gale Mis/Disinformation Portal

One of the databases available through the Statewide Database Licensing Program<https://www.oregon.gov/library/libraries/pages/databases.aspx> is Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints. All Gale In Context databases have portals, or topic pages. Gale staff recently published a new portal in Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints - Disinformation and Misinformation<https://link.gale.com/apps/portal/GQLGYJ888179076/OVIC?u=seoblogs&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=56b90a52>. See the related Gale blog post<https://blog.gale.com/discover-gales-new-disinformation-and-misinformation-portal/> for more information.

Over and out!

Cheers,
Jen

[cid:image005.jpg at 01D97911.2702A530]Hi Folks,

Many of you know that best practice for teaching students how to evaluate information and sources, including those found online, is shifting away from methods such as CRAAP and RADCAB to models such as lateral reading and SIFT. The Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) is one of the organizations leading the shift through their Civic Online Reasoning curriculum, which is free and aimed at middle schoolers and up.

Stanford is offering a 3-day summer institute, Civic Online Reasoning: Sorting Fact from Fiction on the Internet<https://online.stanford.edu/courses/gse-xsheg0006-civic-online-reasoning-sorting-fact-fiction-internet>, from July 25-27 (10:00 am to 12:15 pm Pacific for each of the 3 days), and the State Library is pleased to offer 20 pre-paid registrations.

If you are an instructional librarian who works with Oregon college or university students, or if you are a licensed school or district-level librarian who has the opportunity to provide instruction to Oregon middle and/or high school students, you are eligible to apply for pre-paid registration to take the SHEG course. The application<https://www.cognitoforms.com/StateLibraryOfOregon/ApplyToAttendCivicOnlineReasoningSortingFactFromFictionOnlineCourse2023> will be open through 11:59 pm Pacific Wednesday, 5/3. Oregon licensed teachers who are currently enrolled in a library media endorsement program and intend to work with middle or high school students are also eligible to apply.

Additional details are below my signature block and at the top of the application. Questions? Please ask.

Cheers,
Jen

Apply to attend Civic Online Reasoning: Sorting Fact from Fiction online course (2023)

The State Library is pleased to offer 20 pre-paid registrations to Civic Online Reasoning: Sorting Fact from Fiction on the Internet<https://online.stanford.edu/courses/gse-xsheg0006-civic-online-reasoning-sorting-fact-fiction-internet>, an online course through the Stanford History Education Group, from July 25 - 27, 2023 (10:00 am to 12:15 pm Pacific each of the 3 days).

The State Library cannot reimburse the cost for someone who may have already registered for the course.

Course Description
This institute will introduce participants to the Stanford History Education Group<https://sheg.stanford.edu/>'s Civic Online Reasoning curriculum<https://cor.stanford.edu/>. Participants will learn strategies to help their students become more discerning consumers of information they encounter online.

This three-session institute will address the following topics:

  * Research behind the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum
  * Overview of Civic Online Reasoning curriculum design principles
  * Modeling strategies of professional fact checkers
  * Integrating online sources about current events into the curriculum
  * Assessing students' ability to evaluate digital content

Each session will include opportunities to engage with Civic Online Reasoning materials<https://cor.stanford.edu/> as part of a large group and in small breakout groups. Participants will learn strategies for implementing these resources in their classrooms.
Participants will receive a digital record of completion. Participants who complete the course and assigned homework will be eligible for 1 CEU, issued by the Stanford Center for Professional Development.

Who should enroll? Middle school through post-secondary ... librarians.

Eligible staff are those who:

  * Work with middle or high school students in the role of a school or district-level licensed librarian in Oregon (Oregon licensed teachers who are currently enrolled in a library media endorsement program and intend to work with middle or high school students are also eligible to apply.)
  * Work with college or university students in the role of an instructional librarian in Oregon

In order to gain the most impact from learning events pre-paid by the State Library, we ask all participants to engage fully (attend, participate, discuss, and share).

Deadline
Applications will be accepted through 11:59 Pacific on Wednesday, May 3. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 10.

Please Note
To complete this course, learners can expect to spend 2.25 hours per day, for a total of 6.75 course hours. There may be approximately 1 hour of work after each session. If you are unable to agree to this, please be kind and leave a seat or place for someone else.

Participants should plan to attend a follow-up Zoom meeting hosted by Jen Maurer (School Library Consultant) to be scheduled for within 1 week after the course ends. (Date will be determined by Doodle poll with participants.)

Participants are required to complete coursework and submit the Certificate of Completion to the State Library. Failure to do so without notifying the State Library before the end of the course may impact participants' eligibility to participate in future events paid for by the State Library.
