We were talking to a reader the other day and the subject of Shortcuts came up. Of course we all have our favorite ones that we use to shave off movements with our mouse, or additional keystrokes.

He showed me one that he uses all the time to add a hyperlink to a document or email with Ctrl + K.

When Microsoft switched to icons in a ribbon at the top of documents, many of the keyboard shortcuts went away. Good news, Ctrl + K still works!

Ctrl + K to Add Links

I imagine you're sharing links all the time… to articles, websites, social media, etc… Sometimes you just copy and paste them into a document, and other times you want to embed them so that you see TEXT instead of a long link.

Examples:
· Embedded Link in Text: Tech-Talk on Facebook<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001JEh5eQU3ZdeKJMZWbfwb-Le0co7gABRDgGccrhBw5XFbM4eJIs9WlBen3XW_Ye0F20JD_FPNbsk0O7ZnNTQSk96TnrvJp9zMgz4bo_45wo8dNaNa8Cw26u_A72edEpFrDaQ0E-2mK4jeZ3nCB0LnroW4zQB-BerKybeZAt2Oy_E=&c=R8HXrBDhhKyy2uceVxuwYS63OZW_Eb8e4Ck5IM5RFQ2rQ3MF5jsT7Q==&ch=QOrDNMXkgh64ceqH575C4oVOxN6uaKSc3k8AjYRzeePCLYj_ZubYNw==>
·     Plain Link: https://www.facebook.com/techtalkforyou<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001JEh5eQU3ZdeKJMZWbfwb-Le0co7gABRDgGccrhBw5XFbM4eJIs9WlBen3XW_Ye0F20JD_FPNbsk0O7ZnNTQSk96TnrvJp9zMgz4bo_45wo8dNaNa8Cw26u_A72edEpFrDaQ0E-2mK4jeZ3nCB0LnroW4zQB-BerKybeZAt2Oy_E=&c=R8HXrBDhhKyy2uceVxuwYS63OZW_Eb8e4Ck5IM5RFQ2rQ3MF5jsT7Q==&ch=QOrDNMXkgh64ceqH575C4oVOxN6uaKSc3k8AjYRzeePCLYj_ZubYNw==>

[Ctrl + K]

Instead of going to the toolbar, clicking on the Insert tab and finding the button to add a hyperlink, Ctrl + K pulls up the dialog box instantly to add a hyperlink.

So… if you're one of those people who like a quick keystroke instead of moving the mouse around… try this shortcut when adding links to documents like Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Or when sending emails using Gmail or Outlook.

NOTE: This shortcut may work in other applications, just give it a try.

· To embed a hyperlink, double-click the text you want to be included, enter Ctrl + K and paste your link into the address box.
· Hit OK.

[Ctrl + K box]

Or, to insert the actual link (without embedding it)

· Click Ctrl + K and paste the link in the address box.

Other Uses for Ctrl + K

BONUS! If you're in a browser (instead of a document), the Ctrl + K shortcut has other uses.

· Edge – Click Ctr + K and it opens (duplicates) another browser window.
· Chrome – Ctrl +K moves your cursor to the address bar.
· Firefox – Ctrl K also takes your cursor to the address bar.

Communications: Grammar
"What is 'it'?"

After graduating from High School having been in Honors English, I found myself forced into English 102 (the remedial composition class) having received an incomplete in English 101.

(How embarrassing, especially when your mom is a high achieving English Major.)

At any rate, it was one of the best things that has ever happened, because I learned about the careless use of pronouns.

So often we use them (particularly "it," "this" and "that") without being clear what the "it," "this" and "that" are referring to (often called the antecedent noun.)

As you know, a pronoun is a word used to stand for (or take the place of) a noun. So it's important to make clear what or who this little word is referencing.

For instance...

· "People do not talk or write this way." (What way? What does "this" refer to?)

· "Be sure to put it on the shelf before you leave." (What is "it"? The book cover we were talking about or the book itself?)

I was listening to a friend who mentioned two different things in the same thought and then said, we need to fix it. (Fix what? Which one are you talking about?)

This is a little thing with a big difference. What's the "this"? It's making sure you don't have isolated pronouns so that when you're editing a document or someone else is reading it, they (people) always know what your "it," "this," or "that" are.

You'll be clearer and more convincing when you pay attention to this in your writing. Otherwise, it can come across as vague.
